“Perfect for what we paid”
Reviewed March 9, 2013

Having read some very mixed reviews (including the one that said it's illegally built!) we weren't sure what to expect but were very pleasantly surprised. We found all the staff to be friendly and helpful, the bar was a nice place to have a drink after a day of sight seeing or before going out for dinner. The room wasn't huge and there was little space to put clothes so it was difficult to fully unpack for the 6 nights we were there, however it was clean and well looked after. The a/c unit was broken (or at least we couldn't make it work) so the room got pretty hot at times. It would also be better if the wifi was accessible in the rooms and if there was more selection on the TV but our gripes are minor points really and given the rate we got we were more than happy with our choice of hotel. If you just want a cheap base from which to explore New York then I would fully recommend.

For the price this hotel offers great value for money; clean room, daily housekeeping, friendly and helpful staff plus on the doorstep of 103 street metro!

I read quite a lot of negative reviews about this place before going and was quite apprehensive about what i would find. Overall the comments about the spacious of the rooms are ridiculous. When you are paying such a low rate for hotel rooms in NY what do you honestly expect! If you want luxury then book a five star! Don't expect a champagne lifestyle on a lemonade budget :)

Room Tip: Bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper.

Just arrived home after a 4 night stay at the Marrakech. Was not sure what to expect after reading such mixed reviews on this site, but the hotel was perfect for us! And excellent value for money. Located in a lovely neighbourhood just outside the madness of midtown, but totally accessible on foot or via the subway just outside. Short stroll to Central Park. Everything you could possibly need locally (24 hour supermarket, banks, restaurants, coffee shops, bars etc), and trusty old Starbucks next door where we found ourselves every morning enjoying coffee and stealing their super-fast wifi. The hotel has a really cool lobby with a nice bar open in the evenings. We had 2 rooms on the 4th floor (yes, there is no lift, but you gotta be seriously lazy if you find a couple of flights of stairs an issue) rooms were well equipped with everything you'd expect (TV, phone, bathroom, hair dryer, desks) and very clean and secure, the beds were comfortable with lots of comfy pillows. The staff were a mixed bag of fabulous to rubbish... But you get that anywhere. I've read lots of the bad reviews on this site, but I seriously don't know what people were expecting from a budget hotel... The Marrakech represents excellent value for money and next time we're in NYC, we will definately be staying here.

Sort of a strange little place, but I felt safe and the staff were friendly. Great area and good if your on budget, because there's lots of places to buy healthy food and you can eat in the lobby of the hotel. I liked staying there.

My husband, our 9 year old, and I recently spent a couple of nights. We found a good deal online, but really didn't know what to expect regarding the hotel. The room was adequate, not spacious, but had plenty of room for what we needed. The bath was small but brand new, clean, and well stocked. The proximity to the subway is excellent, the neighborhood had plenty of restaurant options, and the staff was really engaging and thoughtful. The room we had faced the street, so we did have a lot of noise in the night, as well as lots of noise from the hall and the room next to us. All in all, we would do it again because it really checked most of our boxes, and I would have no problem recommending it to a friend.

After a few delays with flight, airport and shuttle service, my sister and I (stressed) finally managed to arrive at Hotel Marrakech around midnight. The guy at the front desk was so tentative and made us feel at ease within minutes. He recommended us to the best pizza place in the area (cheesy pizza) but we think it was the best we had in NYC!
I know this place gets bad reviews for having stairs and the rooms being small... well, get over it. You're aware before you book (judging by the past reviews) and for the pricing of NYC, it's well worth it! The stairs keep you fit whilst on holidays and who expects a room the size of a hall in NYC? This place is basic, clean and has attentive staff. If you want sometime more upmarket, go to the Plaza.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for five nights in February 2013.

We found a fantastic deal on a website, that meant we got the room for less then half price for the week.

The room is very basic, as is the bathroom, but you have exactly what you need for your trip. Please do not go in expecting to have a room the same size as those on Park Avenue. This is New York after all - if you want the space you have to pay for it. It was very clean and had a functioning television. Rooms service did go in every day to make our bed and change our towels.

They do not have a lift, but the staff were fantastic and ran down to lift my suitcase up for me.

Throughout the entire trip, the staff provided excellent service. They were very friendly, (probably the friendliest people in New York), and were exceptionally helpful in changing our large dollar notes and organising transport back to the airport. They were approachable at all times.

The location is absolutely fantastic. You are right next to a subway station and there isn't much noise at night. You do have everything you need on your doorstep, including restaurants, bars and banks.

You can hear some noise through the hotel walls, but it's nothing major at all. You can sleep through it! I think we just happened to be next to a couple who were very much enjoying their stay in the Big Apple!

My only minor complaint would be that the shower seems to alternate between scalding hot and freezing cold many times. By the end of the trip, you will become a dab hand at pre-empting the temperature change and working out which way to turn the control!

As I mentioned earlier, we did get this hotel for less than half price. I can understand why some people were not happy with the accommodation, particularly if they paid the full price for a week. If you want to go to New York and spend the whole day/night in the city, then this hotel is for you. I do recommend trying to find a deal though.

If you want five star accommodation, then be prepared to pay for it. Space is incredibly precious in this city and expensive!
