The hotel is conveniently located on 55th Street West and 5th avenue, within walking distance to all the mid-town department stores, Saks, Bertdorf Goodman and Central Park. The hotel is a bit aged (the lifts are those from the late 1980’s) and the rooms and furniture may need a little bit of touching up.
Nonetheless the rooms are quite spacious, with a large marble bathroom, with showers separated from the bath, although the shower is not that strong or heat, which may be a problem in winter and early months of spring and for those who like a hot strong shower.
I got the room on the 12th floor with views over fifth avenue. There is not much view given that it is 12 floors up, so perhaps street view is not that relevant at all, except that you do get some sunlight into the room in the afternoon, which can be nice in the winter months.
There is free wifi in the room which is convenient for the business traveler.
The bed is very comfortable, soft mattress and pillows, and down feather blankets, which is a recipe for good night’s sleep.
The gym and the pool are located on the top floor. The gym is well equipped with instructor, but can be quite crowded in the morning. The pool is indoor heated but relatively small (around 12 metres long and maximum 3 lanes) and needs some touching up around the edges (there was some rust around the edges). It is quiet before 9a.m. so it is a nice way to start the morning with some laps in it, followed by a short rest on the pool chairs next to the window for some spring morning sunshine going through the daily newspapers and then breakfast by the pool side.
The concierge team is quite helpful with all the restaurant bookings, recommendations, and can arrange late evening messages in room after the spa centre closes at 9:30p.m.
Overall, it is a well-located hotel that provides a very comfortable stay, but needs to undergo some refurbishment soon to keep its edge on its competitors.
