Being a Travel Agent i thought i would add my views on my recent stay at the W New York ! I have been to New York several times and have stayed in Hotels ranging from 3 to 5 star so with the 4 star rating Virgin Holidays give the W my expectations were high. The lobby area is beautiful and very, very busy after dark as it seems most of New York pops in for a drink after work ! We were allocated a room on the 16th floor in one of W's "spectacular" rooms i was really concerned about the room size after reading the reviews on here as the whole point of the trip was to take advantage of the weak $ against the £ and do my Christmas shopping so we had taken 2 huge cases !! Anyway when we stepped out of the lift on the 16th floor i was shocked how dark the corridors were and actually how depressing it felt.On entering our room i was happy to see it was far from small there was plenty of room and the view was decent too...however ....it was so dark the lighting was very poor except in the bathroom which was fine. The carpet was dirty i have to say but apart from that just fine and i didn't plan on spending my 4 days sat in a Hotel room anyway ! I found the staff very friendly and the whatever, whenever service on the front desk was excellent the staff really knew their stuff ! In summary it depends what your going to New York for ! The W is for the hip and trendy the decor, lighting etc is all to try and create that cool look ! The staff were excellent the room a good size, bar prices about average for a 4* Hotel ($10 for a white wine $7 for a beer) and the location just fantastic everything is on your doorstep.Yes its pretty dark in the rooms but do you go to New York to sit in your room 24 hours a day ? If your in your 20-30's looking for a hip Hotel with a great bar area in a central location go for it ! otherwise look else where there are plenty of fantastic Hotels in New York !!

The W Hotels have a recurring campaign on W-words--whenever, why not, etc. For us, it was "we don't get it." As the flagship hotel, the quality of the rooms were far from what we expected. Manhattan hotel rooms are tiny, but in the regular-sized room the closet door barely cleared the bottom of the bed. The lobby was quite nice though, and they had a handy hot chocolate and marshmallow station near the elevators. But aside from the lounge-like atmosphere of the lobby, we won't stay at the hotel again, mostly because of the size of the rooms. For half the price, you can stay at a Choice Hotel where the rooms aren't bigger, but your expectations will certainly won't be completely let down.

Hotel lobby is great! Then you get to the rooms which are depressing. The elevators are a nightmare. Back to the rooms. When I went upstairs to my room, people were already there and had been double checked-in! Small, no space and restored in a very shabby way. Wasn't cheap so I was dissapointed. I've stayed in other W hotels and this is is the worst! Don't waste your money!

Just a quick note not to stay at this hotel! Overpriced, small rooms, and extremely poor service! Save your money and stay somewhere else!

The hotel is very funky but I thought with a suite we would have a decent sized room. Unfortunatley the room was very small and the bathroom like a cupboard!
Beside this the hotel itself is really nice and I found the staff very help indeed!

We stayed at the W because the Mercer was fully booked and you get what you pay for. For 450 dollars per night one could reasonable expect a fantastic room and great service. The hotel room was tiny, shabby and damp. The staff were dismissive and basically ignored our requests (3 times) for someone to take a look at the issues we had with the room. The bathroom was tiny, there was mould growing in the carpet, there was a cigarette burn in one of the blinds... I could go on. If you want a room of this standard (but 3 times the size) pay a quarter of the price and stay in 2 star accomodation close by (I have in the past!!) All in all the W Lexington put a huge dampner on what should have been a fabulous weekend in New York.

I concur with most of the negative reviews. Very expensive, yet very shabby. Bathroom is tiny, dirty and smelled of mildew. Desk had sticky stuff on it. Linens were worn. Slip cover on chair worn and dirty. Light in entranceway burned out. Decidedly downscale.
