“Great location, great staff but there's no question that the accomadation is average”
Reviewed January 8, 2013

Now, i know that for some reason we are meant to excuse New York for the general state of their hotel accommodation, for some reason all the issues that may come our way are a little bit more tolerable because this is the Big Apple . . . i don't see why.

The three key things:
Location wise it is great (but then again in Manhattan nowhere is going to be that bad!)
Service: no question that is was excellent - the concierge, the cleaning staff, the door man, check-in, all of them were 5 star - for this reason alone i would consider coming back here. They were an absolute credit to themselves and to the hotel.
Room: this is the reason i felt i had to give an average feedback. There are about four or five categories of rooms at the W NYC, i paid extra and upgraded twice to the 'spectacular' room. Let me be honest, there was absolutely nothing 'spectacular' about this room. It was like something i would expect from a Holiday Inn or a Novotel. It was dark, plain (and not plain as in 'minimalist cool', it was just plain) and sadly depressing. I thought perhaps it was just my room but i asked to be moved and the new 'spectacular' room was just as dull.
Sorry for the rant, and i don't normally mind about hotel rooms in NYC, but having paid so much to stay at the W and then having upgraded on top of that i was genuinely disappointed.
My advice is that if you want to stay here, just go for the cheapest room and spend the difference on a great dinner (try The Lion Restaurant on West 9th Street, we loved it).

The hotel manager was very helpful in terms of our getting a larger suite to accomodate an unexpected guest. The hotel's location is great for a visit to New York. As has been the case with other W Hotels the staff is friendly and efficient. The room was above average. Free Internet for Starwood members was a big plus. The breakfast included with the room package was excellent and a very good deal. No army stype buffet. Real food served hot and fresh.

Room Tip: Higher floor have less traffic noise. However, that is an issue with any downtown hotel.

We chose the W because we knew it was a bit more 'boutique' compared to the traditional hotels we stay in, however, whilst it was trendy and young in clientele it did have an air of laid back and care free. Don't get me wrong the reception staff were cool and businesslike, they were helpful about changing our room from a Double to a King but unfortunately didn't have any twins left for our adult children. The concierge Marcus & David were very helpful always providing information when asked and in fact Marcus kindly arranged for us to sit by the window above Central Park in a fab restaurant jazz bar. The rooms were always clean and the maids were always friendly and happy, The rooms were small but we didn't have a suite or a WoW room. Shower in bath, one small sink and absolutely nowhere to place a wash bag. TV good but films pricey. Breakfast was terrific but pricey. Coffee bar was perfect to have tea/coffee/croissant in the morning but damn shame no coffee facilities in the room for that morning pick me up before having to get dressed. Would possibly stay again because of the service but might try somewhere else next time.

Room Tip: quicker to have a room up to floor 6 otherwise takes ages to wait for the lift and there are 2 dedic...

Can recommend this hotel. I had read various things about NYC hotels being small. I didnt think that was the case. The room was spacious enough - cozy room. The bed was v warm and comfortable. Lovely shower with Bliss products provided. Everywhere was clean and well cared for. Staff friendly and efficient. Sit in the lounge/bar and use the free wifi. NYC notoriously noisy take ear plugs for the noise from the street....even high up you can hear it - this is not a criticism just a statement of fact.

Room Tip: Ask for a high quiet room

For future reference, the hotel does offer complimentary ear plugs for our guests who would like to further escape the rush of New York City. Our recent stay at the W hotel on Lexington was good. Room although small was spotless, modern and comfortable. We would be happy to return for future trips. Location was convenient midtown location. Lobby decor modern. We did not use the spa, fitness center or restaurant.

Stayed in here for a few nights and everything was great. Nothing too spectacular. The rooms are small but very nice. The location is wonderful, we were able to walk everywhere we needed to including Times Square, Central Park etc. which was great. The staff were very nice and lets us check in early. The concierge was especially helpful in getting us dinner reservations and a show booked. Ordered some champagne from room service and was told it would be around 45 minutes before it arrived as it was dinner time and they were busy however took only about 15 to show up, nice surprise!! The workout room is decently equipped with about everything you could want or need which was awesome! And love the apples in the lobby:)

We stayed at W New York from Jan 1st to Jan 4th in a wondeful room, but did not find it too wonderful. Even though it had two rooms, because of the terrible view (over the old and dirty parking lot in one room and facing the wall of the building in another room) it felt like there is not enough space and light. The room was clean, but because there was not enough day light it felt very dark and depressing.

The service was very unsatisfying. One day we had a lunch at the bar and the server was not welcoming or friendly, it felt like he is doing us a favour by serving us, which is unacceptable at a 5-star hotel! Also, it was impossible to reach Whatever/Whenever service, some days I had to call in 3-4 times to reach anyone, and even when I got to talk to someone it took them forever to bring the amenity that I've requested. I asked for a kettle, but they said they didnt have any more left, then I asked for a fridge and to my suprise they wanted to charge me $50 + tax, obviously I did not want to pay this ridiculous price for an amenity that should be provided complimentary at a hotel in Manhattan, so I thought I will use the minibar as a fridge, but when I asked to remove the items from the minibar they wanted to charge me $25 for removing the items, which is outrageous considering that they are not willing to provide a complimentary fridge and do not have enough kettles for eveyone.

Overall, the location is pretty good (close to Times Square, 5th Avenue and other popular spots), the service is way lower than expected and the room is just okay (for some reason the bed was not as good as I expected, after the first night I had terrible back pain)...Don't think I would choose to stay here again.
