Chelsea Savoy Hotel
Ranked #274 of 471 Hotels in New York City
Reviewed August 16, 2011

The Chelsea is a rare deal for a two-star hotel in the middle of Manhattan. For two beds the charge was $145/night + taxes. In August, you're lucky to find anything under $200. I've stayed in two- and three-star hotels around Manhattan, so I have those experiences to use as a measuring stick.

Pros:

Spacious room. I've stayed in tiny three-star hotels, so I was pleasantly surprised.

Attentive staff: I've read complaints about rudeness, but I didn't encounter this problem. They let me and my traveling partner leave our bags in the morning and check in later when our room was cleaned. They offered a band-aid when we asked for one. They looked up the locations of sights without hesitation.

Clean: No bugs. Good chambermaid service. Clean towels. Toiletries (shampoo, lotion, etc.) daily re-stocked. Fresh towels.

Breakfast: Okay, it's only bagels, muffins and croissants plus coffee, but it's a good start to the day, and there are lots of nearby restos to grab eggs, etc.

Location: 23rd/7th which means you access to different subway lines on this block. You can walk south the Greenwich Village, Chinatown, etc., or north to Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, Macy's, etc.

Shower: Great water pressure. Clean taps, etc.

Cons:

A little noisy: I was on the 3rd floor facing 7th and you can hear sirens at night.

AC: A little slow. The air con has a limited range in temperature, so you have to run it for a while to cool the room.

Washroom: lacks a fan/ventilator. A minor quibble.

No gym or business center. You have to pay $10/day for WiFi. My advice: Go to the public library across the street during business hours or the local Starbucks.

Overall, I was happy with my stay here and would consider coming again. Advice: Call the hotel directly for a good rate.

I stayed in this hotel for a night in June. I picked it based on the reviews at Tripadvisor and my choice was right. The main advantage is its location. Its at 10 min walking distance from the Penn station. One can also easily walk upto the Times square from the hotel. The room was good, clean. The breakfast did not have much choices, but was good. The front desk was very prompt and informative. Location wise its perfect.

Great location right near everything, the doughnut plant is a few doors down, so that was a highlight.
The staff are helpful didnt go out of their way but answered any questions and gave good directions.
The room was a good size, bed comfortable, bathroom clean and neat, not too big but not too small. The air conditioning was in working order, the only drawback was the noise from the street but it is new York so I would say take ear plugs.
Small bar fridge was in the room for drinks etc..hair dryer in the bathroom.
There are plenty of options for subways with one out side the building, and one both blocks in either direction so you have a good choice for anything either up town or downtown.
Loved the location and the locals were friendly.

Ok, if you are used to a big fancy hotel with a fancy lobby, keep looking. If you are looking for a very affordable room, $130 a night for us, in a great location, start booking. This hotel is small, and has basically no amenities, but the location can't be beat. 20 blocks to Time Square or Little Italy. High Line Park and Hudson River Park are also close. Many subway lines are within two blocks and if you don't mind walking a couple a miles a day, you can walk everywhere from here. The rooms leave a lot to be desired. They are small and very basic, but NYC is the city that never sleeps. If you care about having a big nice room, then you aren't seeing enough of NYC. Many great little restaurants just south on 7th Ave. Would highly recommend for someone looking for a clean affordable place to shower and sleep.

Stayed at the hotel with my girlfriend, brother and his wife. Really liked hotel location and found room size to be all right. Was incredibly insulted by the front desk lady, who called me on the room and woke me up saying that I was lying to her about my brother having called a cab. I've never seen anyone so unprepared for dealing with public!
Among the 3 other guys in the front desk I spoke to, 2 were also very unfriendly. It seemed that I was disturbing their peace every time I needed to ask a question.
If you have to stay there, ask for a room that doesn't face the street, or you'll wake up with the noise. Stayed in the 3rd floor and it was impossible to sleep.
Room safe was tiny.
Don't recommend staying there if you expect to see smiles from any of the hotel workers.

Room Tip: Quad rooms are just a little more expensive, but have much better size. Avoid facing the streets, wh...

It was a great hotel for the price. Breakfast was not advertised and just as well because it was not so good. Friendly staff. Very flexible and very nice rooms. Will come back again anytime. Love the district Chelsea in NYC.

We stayed at the Chelsea Savoy hotel for 2 nights in July 2011. I was with my wife, 2 year old and 8 week old daughter. The hotel got us a portable crib that was clean and perfect for my 2 year old. You should know going in that this is nowhere close to a luxury hotel. It is a basic hotel without a ton of amenties. This worked perfectly for us because we had friends two blocks away. If you are looking for a clear place to stay in a great location, then this is the hotel for you. The free continental breakfast was basic but a nice touch. Don't expect amenities like a business center, gym, day spa, etc. The location is great right above the 1,2,3 subway line and a block away from the A,C,E.

We sayed in a king room for $155/night. The room was very clean and fairly well appointed. The room had a minifridge, desk, flatscreen TV, air conditioning and a standard bathroom with clean towels, shampoo and soap. There is daily maid service and the maintenance staff came up very quickly when are A/C stopped working.

Overall this is a very solid hotel for New York City. The price is right and the location ideal for exploring the city.
