.Had my reservation cancelled twice! They have a policy which makes you pay the full amount prior to arrival. I spoke to the owner on the phone and explained my student credit card would not be able to take the full amount. Therefore my reservation was cancelled.

I booked it again and explained to someone else I was paying cash and had made travel arrangements guaranteeing I would be there. One week past, no word of cancellation. I spent a day on the train travelling and tried and tried to contact the owner for a period of 5 hours prior to arrival but couldn’t reach him.

When I arrived I didn’t know if I had a booking! I then found out it was cancelled. JOE (owner) sent me an EMAIL (no phone call) while on the train. It was pure luck the apartment was still available.

Reviewed July 28, 2008

My girlfriend and I stayed in the Lexington Suite in the Upper Yorkville Suites location from June 30th to July 7th, 2008. The suite itself (essentially a 500 sq ft condo unit) was very nicely appointed with exposed brick walls, private bath, hardwood floors, an LCD TV with DVD player, and a fully equipped kitchen. The suite both met and exceeded our expectations as the suite was extremely clean, all appliances worked (new appliances) and staff were exceptionally friendly. The building was also very quiet with an excellent security system in front of the building. We gave the staff a courtesy call from the airport when we arrived and they waited curbside for us as we pulled up in a taxi. The only thing that marks the place is a very nice, out-of-place, glass door that is the next door north of the Macdonalds entrance (hence, this place can be easily missed if your not looking close). As there is no elevator in this older (but renovated) building, the owners were more than eager to help us carry up some of our luggage on arrival. Upon arrival they gave us a plethora of information on different details of the suite, security information, and highly recommended local eating establishments. The restaurants in the neighbourhood are wonderful and in particular there is a Spanish restaurant that is one block west of the place (on Lexington and 104th) that is fabulous. This restaurant is a highly recommended first stop if your hungry after a long plane ride.
Now, anyone thinking of staying here should know that this building is located in Harlem (Spanish Harlem). There are project-like buildings in the neighbourhood, although I was informed that this area is an "up and coming" neighbourhoood. This should NOT detract you from staying here if you are coming to NYC and eager to experience a little culture. This area is really cool to walk around during the daytime. In my humble opinion - Time Square and 5th avenue sleeping establishments do not adequately reflect real NYC culture. If you are caucasion, expect to be a minority in this neighbourhood, although you will quickly adapt and learn to enjoy the experience. People here and NYC in general were exceptionally friendly (*thankyou NYC*). Coming from Canada, my only thoughts to leave others is that I likely wouldn't recommend walking around after 10 PM in this area. The street lights tend to be quite distant from each other leaving side streets a little too dim for my comfort. The only thing I recommend for the owners of this building is to watch their prices. We stayed in the Lexington Suite for $175 a night and they are now at $225. Considering there are other places in Manhattan that are in this price range (and perhaps in neighbourhoods that are somewhat more secure), these suites may be over-priced for the Harlem district. Another little nuisance was the coffee maker. We eventually figured it out, but was disappointed with the diluted coffee it made (makes good tea though). Coffee-drinkers don't panic because there is a Dunkin Donuts and Macdonalds just out the front door:) The subway is one block west which is super convenient and a grocery store about two blocks south. Central Park is also a very easy walk from here. If I came back to New York I would stay here again as long as prices do not exceed what they are currently listed at. There is an absence of reviews on this place as it is a newer business. Don't worry as they run a very legitimate and professional establishment:) Hope this helps someone else!
