Depends what type of traveller you are, personally whilst there is a lot of lights and entertainers the restaurants are poor.

Seeing the area in the evening , with all the buildings lit up was breath-taking . Would not have missed it for anything .

We spent Veteran's Day weekend here - I was extremely surprised at how clean the streets are kept and everyone was polite and friendly! All of the restaurants and shops that we visited were great - I could have done without all the "characters" that are there to pose for pictures. Some of them were absurd! Really - an overweight, short & bearded Captain America??????

Times Square and the Freemint Street Experience in Vegas have similar feels. Lights, movement, nudity....always a surprise. Great time waiting for the Theater.

My husband and I visited NYC for 5 days. Our hotel was located a couple of blocks away from Time Square. The lights from a distance are pretty but that is all the good I have to say about it. After sightseeing throughout the city and visiting stunning parks, neighborhoods, museums and landmarks I was completely underwhelmed at the condition of Time Square. Where most of the city was clean and well kept, Time Square was a dump. Rotton food and trash littered the ground, the smell of urine was strong and overwhelming, pushy vendors and street performers made it hard to navigate. Combine that with thousands of people and it was miserable! We attended 2 Broadway musicals while in N.Y. and after the first time walking through Time Square we made sure to navigate around it instead of going through it. After Lion King was able to take some pretty pictures from the 2nd floor of the theatre but that's the only way I would want to view Time Square in the future. Take my advice and enjoy the lights from a distance.

Time Square sums up everything we were dreading about New York - loud, brash, vulgar, crowded, edgy, ugly, OTT. Fortunately, the rest of the city is very different. I suppose it has to be seen and experienced, but don't loiter. New York is full of wonderful treasures (Met Museum, Frick Collection, Central Library, Lincoln Center etc etc) so don't loiter here unless to go to the half price theater ticket booth (but there's also one at Lincoln Center and another down by the docks).

It's worth seeing, but avoid the people in costumes, people selling comedy shows and other scammers. It's very noisy and a lot going on.

Well worth a visit, very busy though. See Bloomingdales, Macy’s, sacks as well as Empire State Building.
