Description: With their 1858 landscaping plan under construction, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux began adding architectural features to their Park design. Around 1874, Vaux designed a two-story boathouse at the eastern end of the Lake. Here visitors could purchase refreshments, take boat rides, and watch other boats. After this wooden Victorian structure with sloping mansard roof burned down, the current Loeb Boathouse took its place in the 1950s. Today at the New York Boathouse visitors can enjoy a meal in any season, with overhead heating helping to extend as long as possible the pleasure of dining on the deck overlooking the Lake. Come visit a New York legend!

We really enjoyed the food and atmosphere at The Boathouse - we had salmon to start followed by chicken, goats cheese and walnut salad. Two cosmos to wash it down! The restaurant itself has great views over the lake and park, the food was tasty for lunch but it was a bit pricey.

My only issue was with the staff at the front entrance of the Boathouse. When we arrived at 11.30 and asked if we could reserve a table for lunch in the restaurant I was told that they would not take same day bookings but if we came back at 12 we might get something. This wouldn't have been a problem if the staff member had communicated this in a positive way but her tone and attitude was very rude and it was as if it was an inconvenience to answer our question.

We returned at 11.50 to a long que however it moved quickly and the waiting staff were v.efficient inside. If you are going for lunch I recommend arriving no later than 11.45 to get a table for the doors opening at 12.

We went for a birthday and were sat by the window overlooking the lake - it was beautiful. I ordered the twin burgers, which were lovely but I found the service to be average compared to other places in New York. They were giving all the tables the free bread but we seemed to have been missed out until we asked for some about half way through our meal. Prices were less than average compared to other places in New York.

We have been by the Boathouse many times having lived in Manhattan for decades. Last Sunday was the first time we had the chance to eat in the restaurant proper, the previous times being limited to their snack/take out eating area. We were pleased to experience a fine meal and gracious service even though it was a crowded and sunny Sunday afternoon. Mr. Fonda, the restaurant manager was particularly nice and helpful. Try to get a table right by the water to watch the people boating and the authentic gondola with red and white stripped shirted gondolier at the helm.

This was our second visit to The Boathouse. It's just such a great setting right in the middle of Central Park and a super spot to round off our trip to NYC. But it's not a tourist trap. The food was really great - had an interesting starter that included something like a pickled strawberry which was just ingenious. It's great for people watching too!!
