If you want to get a feel for what Manhattan was like before it became the Great Metropolis... come up to the Cloisters. The views of the Hudson are amazing and the grounds are beautiful.

For Art Lovers - which I am not - this is a great collection, and gives you a great feel for European History and Early Art.

Though it needs a little effort to get there, the reword is great. The most beautiful place I can think of in Manhattan.

If you can't afford to go to Europe this museum gives you a wonderful idea of what European history looks like. The Unicorn tapestries are gorgeous! So glad I visited i even if I have been to many monasteries in France & Italy. The American style of mixing pieces from different countries proves to be a good idea for saving pieces and putting them together to form a marvellous new unit.
