Owner description: The Whitney Museum of American Art, founded in 1930 by the artist and philanthropist Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, houses the foremost collection of American art from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Mrs. Whitney, an early and ardent supporter of modern American art, nurtured groundbreaking artists at a time when audiences were still largely preoccupied with the Old Masters. From her vision arose the Whitney Museum of American Art, which has been championing the most innovative art of the United States for more than eighty years. The core of the Whitney's mission is to collect, preserve, interpret, and exhibit American art of our time and serve a wide variety of audiences in celebration of the complexity and diversity of art and culture in the United States. Through this mission and a steadfast commitment to artists themselves, the Whitney has long been a powerful force in support of modern and contemporary art and continues to help define what is innovative and influential in American art today.

“Wait till the Biennial has finished”
Reviewed March 23, 2014

I visited the Whitney hoping to see works from the well-regarded permanent collection of modern American art. The day I turned up happened to be the first day of the Biennial, so there was only one floor of 'proper' art, the rest was the rubbish they claim to represent the current state of the art world. No reduction in entry fee, even though you can only see a small part of the collection. I suggest waiting till 26 May, when order will return.

“A great contemporary museum.”
Reviewed March 20, 2014

It was my first trip to the Whitney. It was wonderful to see so many Hoppers in one room. We got the free audio guide and started on the 5th floor working our way down. Many of the exhibits seem similar but most were vey exceptional. I would like to visit again after there move to the new building.

“Museum's permanent collection is good but Biennial is terrible”
Reviewed March 16, 2014

This is the last Biennial to be held in this building. If the Whitney is having an exhibit of Hopper or of items from their permanent collection, it can be great. The Biennials are mixed at best. The current incarnation is especially terrible.

After taking our $10 each (half price) the day after Valentine's Day, we find out that 1/5 of the museum is open for full viewing - 5th floor for all intents and purposes! We went to see the Edward Hopper collection ....dissappointing!!!!!

“Great museum, if you go when they have an exhibit that's up your alley”
Reviewed January 31, 2014

Definitely check the exhibits before deciding to go. The focus of this museum is their rotating exhibits, so a trip to the Whitney if there are no exhibits to your liking is a waste of time and money. Having said that, they are excellent curators.
