“Very good neighborhood Japanese food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 7, 2013

First-time visit here. The dining room is narrow and somewhat cramped, with a small bar area at the front. Service is pleasant and reasonably efficient. It's clearly a popular place and was completely full by mid-evening. Everything we chose was excellent - black cod, pork served with kimchi or scallions, mixed skewers (fish, chicken and beef). There's a small beer selection plus cocktails (including their famous lychee martini) and, of course, a huge sake selection.

Well worth a visit!

“Loved this charming neighbourhood restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2013

Happened upon Izakaya Ten on 10th Avenue (near 22nd Street) and loved it. Went back a few days later and loved it again. Sat at the bar. Great barman - Mikio - thanks for being who you are. Good friendly service, good fresh food. Pleasant and relaxed. Not cheap, but also not expensive, somewhere in between.

“Yum!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2013

Had a delicious dinner with friends. The lychee martini was perfect; not too strong and not too sweet. We shared everything which is my preference (to try more!). The spicy cucumber, agadashi tofu, saikoro beef steak, black cod and spicy tuna donburi were incredible. The mori set was disappointing by comparison. The green tea mochi was the best mochi I've had and comes in 2 large pieces. My only criticism is the amount of tuna in the spciy tuna donburi was skimpy. Otherwise, the service was excellent (attentive, friendly and helpful without being intrusive). Would happily return.

“A neighborhood gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2013

Had dinner here with a friend who lives in the building above the restaurant. So nice to have great sushi in such a charming, neighborhood restaurant. It looks small when you first walk in but it goes back far, so we didn't have to wait long. Many people were stopping in for take-out, always a sign that it's a good neighborhood spot - not touristy which is always my fear when dining in big cities and going off review websites.

We sat in the way back room which was cozy but surprisingly comfortable and not at all loud, even though there were two large parties in the same room. We didn't have to shout but there was good energy, and the service was steady, well-paced and friendly.

While it may not be authentic Japan, it is a great sushi place in a fun neighborhood that really is reasonably priced (four of us ate ALOT and drank some for $200). I say if you are in the mood for sushi and a stroll on the High Line, you should go.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2013

Really sorry to admit it: although staff was very friendly and attentive, overall experience was very disappointing. I know my izakaya, having lived in rural Japan and this ain't it. Over priced, average food in a trendy atmosphere, where everyone seems to have a vague European accent. The yakitori was rudimentary, in both selection as well as flavor. Sushi was forgettable. I understand that prices have to be high in NYC but in that case: TEN: you've got to up your game.
