“Fantastic place to stay in NYC”
Reviewed January 29, 2011

This hotel is wonderful! Clean, quiet, large rooms in a great location. But what makes those things even better is the hotel staff. The staff at this hotel are friendly, professional and very helpful. Thank you for making our stay wonderful..we will be back. The beds were very comfortable and breakfast was an added bonus. If you are looking for a clean, comfortable, budget-friendly place to stay with great amenities this is your hotel.

I've visited NYC over 25 times, and the Best Western Bowery is the best room for the price I've ever experienced. I got a great deal with a Travelocity package and when I take into consideration the level of service I received, the size and cleanliness of the room, the decor, the downtown location and free breakfast (gasp!), I will stay here again and again.

You're smack in the middle of Chinatown/Little Italy, so the neighbourhood is definitely crazy and bustling. It's walking distance to the subway, Lower East Side, Soho and I'd much rather stay downtown than uptown. When you walk in, take the elevator up to the lobby. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They referred to us by name during our stay and treated us like old friends. They stow your bags for no charge if you arrive and a room isn't ready, though there is the bag fee if you need to store your luggage before you depart. This isn't ideal, but I'm willing to overlook it because of my overall experience.

The room is clean with wood floors and dark wood furniture. While this is still a value hotel, the design and interior is much nicer than you'd expect. It's average in size, I've definitely seen smaller in Manhattan. The bed is fine and there's enough room for luggage and clothes. The bathroom is much nicer than you'd expect from a Best Western propery with a large shower. And while the Pantene and Vaseline lotion toiletries weren't deluxe, they definitely did the job.

The included breakfast still blows my mind. This is definitely a rarity for NYC and it's a great way to start your day and save a few bucks. The best part are the make-your-own waffles. There's also hot and cold beverages, cereals, fruit, hard-boiled eggs, bagels, oatmeal and little sandwiches with ham, some unusual cheese, lettuce, mayo and tomatoes.

This BW is way closer to a boutique hotel than a budget motel. It's truly the hidden gem of Manhattan.

Clean, attentive, unpretentious, and TOTALLY AFFORDABLE! Welcome to the Best Western Bowery Hanbee Hotel. The reviews are true: my wife and I spent a Saturday night here while visiting our East Village-resident son, and everything about the place was excellent. This is not luxury -- but it's very high quality and utterly clean and professional. It's about a block from the B/D subway line, and is smack in the middle of Chinatown/Little Italy. It had the feel (and price) a a good off-the-interstate-exit mid-price hotel... only it's in Manhattan. An oasis of affordability, and a great place to come back to at night.

Stayed for 2 nights at the Best Western Bowery Hotel. On arrival was somewhat surprised at the lack of 'entrance' to the hotel - there's just a small doorway with security and reception on the 2nd floor. Fine, but this means there's noone to help get cabs, and we spent some time walking to find taxis each day.

Rooms - are modern as it's a new hotel but small. The shower was very good (big walk in shower, no bath tub). Flat screen TV and other essenails. Unlike the rest of the hotel, the beds seemed to be ancient! Every time i moved in bed (and I am not a large person) all the springs creaked. The quality of cleaning and general housekeeping was questionable and i cound several hairs on the bed throw on arrival (yuk). |The main problem i had with my room was the air conditioning = this would come on every 30 minutes with very loud blasts, which meant i was woken up every 30 minutes during the night. The 'off' switch didn't work, so as a result i had very poor sleep.

Staff - were generally polite and helpful.

Breakfast - very basic (cereal, coffee, toast, boiled egg), no hot items available.

Location - this hotel is in Chinatown, not Little Italy or Soho. It's not a great area and we were advised by several locals that it's not safe to walk back to the hotel at night. I wouldn't recommend it for single female travellers. there were also some less desirable types staying in this hotel.

To sum it up = fine if you are looking for somewhere cheap to stay in Manhattan and you aren't so bothered about hte location, service or comfort. I would not recommend this hotel to tourists, since you are far away from all the main attractions here.

My wife and I were staying when the blizzard hit late Dec 2010, instead of 3 days, we were there 8. With so much chaos for so many travelers the front desk staff were impeccably mannered and as helpful as they could possibly be, attending to all issues as soon as they could under great pressure.

The hotel is ideally located for those who like walking around the cooler parts of lower Manhattan as well as the bustle of lower Broadway. The B, D subway from Grand Street a couple of blocks away takes you up and into the west village without a change and pretty much everywhere else from Broadway Lafayette.

The rooms were cleaned spotlessly and fitted out nicely, the laminate floor in the bedroom and heated floor in the bathroom (room dependent) an unexpected and quality touch from Best Western.

There was a basic breakfast/buffet included, but we didn't try it.

The only potential issues, which are no reflection on the staff and presumably down to which room you get, are noise and very patchy internet.

In the middle of Chinatown, traffic noise from outside is pretty well cut out but always reminding you of the bustle of the city and if you have a neighboring room that likes their TV on just a little loud or are themselves noisy it can come right through the walls. For us it was no problem and just letting next door know was all it took to have a quiet stay, but it could have been an issue if the neighbor hadn't cared. So really, this was all that I can think to separate the Hotel from any hugely pricey alternative. We would stay there again, in fact my wife is making plans to already.

The internet was an aggravation. It's free, but didn't often work (using mac) sufficiently to allow us to load pages properly on many sites. Free tech tried to help, but the situation didn't improve and was deemed by support to be down to the Hotel's internet. Hopefully Best Western will attend to it. Email/skype worked fine but if we'd have needed access to your own web pages etc this would have been a problem.

For the combination of price and location, go, stay and enjoy Manhattan.

I have never stayed in NY before, although many friends have, we all have heard of the high prices here, and some stories of seedy rooms etc, so I was very leary of staying in the city at a lower cost hotel. Thanks to reviews of this hotel we decided to stay here, very glad we did. The room I booked was upgraded to a suite! Really clean, roomy, comfortable. Ours had a view of Grand st, it was on the 5th floor and quiet. Breakfast is served in a small but pleasant room on the 2nd floor. The staff were very helpful and friendly especially Sayed, who went out of his way to be so. We would stay here again and recomment friends to do so. The hotel is in Chinatown, a block from Little Italy, a few blocks from Broadway, so is in a good location. There is a great little sushi place just around the corner off Elizabeth & Broome sts. Its small but the food is great. Of course there is lots of Chinese places, as well as open markets selling fresh fruit, fish etc all around. We found super cherries! They even had stone crab claws! Another resturant we tried was Tropical, on Elizabeth, it has a great little taco, but the Calimari was tough.

We stayed at the Best Western Bowery Hanbee for 6 nights in early December. It was our first stay in New York (first time in the US for me) and we spent a fair while looking around for hotels before booking. Accommodation in Manhattan is pricey, our budget was limited but we wanted somewhere comfortable and handy for the sights. All in all the hotel was a very good compromise for our needs. We had friends staying around the Times Square area and paying significantly more and having seen their hotels we were convinced we made the right choice.

The hotel doesn't have a bar or restaurant but then there's so much to see and do we wouldn't have made use of the facilities if they did. Our room was very comfortable with a desk and chair, phone and TV. The bed was extremely comfortable and very warm (the room itself could be a little on the chilly side but then it was winter). The shower was lovely - very powerful and easy to set the temperature exactly as you wanted it.

The main thing though that made an impression on us was the atmosphere. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful and the atmosphere relaxed. We didn't really take full advantage of the complimentary breakfast because we tend to eat a bit later (stopping at a coffee shop for elevenses) but there seemed to be quite a reasonable spread. The breakfast seating area was quite small so if you hit the breakfast rush people tended to spill out into the sofa area on the other side of the reception but this just seemed to reflect the laid back friendly atmosphere.

The other major plus is the location. It's very close to the Canal St subway station and your also within walking distance of both the Financial District in one direction and Times Square in the other. To be honest there's so much to see everywhere we ended up taking our time and walking everywhere.

While the immediate area certainly isn't upmarket, it's interesting in it's own right with lots of shops spilling out onto the pavement with exotic fruit, spices and fresh (extremely fresh in some cases) seafood. We tended to go out in the evenings either up to the Times Square area or East Village and coming back, no matter what the time we never felt less than safe.
