Owner description: The final resting place of President Ulysses Simpson Grant and his wife, Julia, is the largest mausoleum in North America. It testifies to a people's gratitude for the man who ended the bloodiest conflict in American history as Commanding General of the Union Army and then, as President of the United States, strove to heal a nation after a civil war and make rights for all citizens a reality.

“A Memorable Visit to a Beautiful Monument”
Reviewed January 20, 2012

I was surprised to find that there was a visitor's center that had not only merchandise, but a ranger who spoke about Grant & the Monument and several times throughout the day. We arrived more than 5 minutes late for the 1:15 presentation, but since no one was there they eagerly offered to do the presentation for us! The ranger was very knowledgeable and welcoming. I'm a big history buff, and I found that he knew his stuff. Don't expect to hear too many negatives about Grant, but at the same time I really liked that he focused on the positives, as many don't realize the good things Grant did for this country in the Civil War and his Presidency.

I wasn't sure what to expect once we were inside the Monument, but it was beautifully designed & maintained. There were a few people there, but it's very large and it's easy to find a little space to just take it all in. It really is a wonderful tribute to Grant. You can take a subway and get within decent walking distance. It's in Riverside Park, and it's so quaint that you forget you're in NYC. Anyone with any interest in history needs to visit!

I can't tell you how much we enjoyed this beautiful memorial. Don't know how we did it, but we were the only ones to be inside...and the memorial is gorgeous...

“An Education”
Reviewed January 1, 2012

I grew up not too far from this Memorial. It is very impressive. Once inside you will view the President's life in photos and exhibits. The lower level wil lhave both his and his wife's sarcophagus. The area is located by the Hudson river. Great views. Great location. Parking will be a problem. I suggest that you take the subway. Happy travels!
