Take the horse and carriage ride. We did that on the spur of the moment, and we were glad we did. We could then see all Central Park by making the loop around it. The driver was informative as well

Definutely a park best walked. We almost hired cycles but glad we didn't in the end because we discovered that it is not permitted to ride cycles in many areas of the park anyway. Which would mean that you would miss seeing many of the best parts of the park. Visiting Central Park is an absolute must when visiting New York. I would say the only draw back are the cycle touts on the outskirts of the park, who can be very persistant in trying to get you to hire from them but they're not a problem once inside the park.

After 3 days of cramming in sight after sight, it was nice to spend a day just relaxing around the park. We walked from the FAO Schwarz corner, via the boating lake (which was great fun) to the Natural History Museum and then back across to 5th Ave. The further in you walk the quieter and more peaceful it gets :)
