If you go to one museum in New York City, make it the Met. We spent half a day there and it wasn't nearly enough. There is so much to see that it should be a two day experience. I rented an audio guide and it was very helpful to learn about the background of the artists and their paintings. You are allowed to take pictures as long as you don't use the flash. It was a once in a lifetime experience for me to see such wonderful art!

This place is incredible and overwhelming, especially the painting galleries on the second floor. I think it would take you two or three days to really look at everything, so you might want to plan what you want to see if you only have one day, as we did. The $$ admission is only suggested, so come here anyway if you're looking to appreciate art and you don't have a lot of cash. Bring your camera and your walking shoes :-)

We spent an enjoyable couple of hours looking around the Museum. It is so big that we decided to focus on just a few areas. The Art ranges from ancient to Modern and from painting to sculpture to temples. There was a very useful coat store near the main door and a number of places to eat. We were amused by the donation system for admission but actually it is a very good idea as it allows students and those that can't afford the price to still enter.

I spent a day with my 13-year-old son, our first mission was to see the Scarpa/Venini glass and then to see some of his interests: Arms and Armor and musical instruments. We wandered around on a snowy day having just a great time. This is one of the best museums in the world, and a great place to ramble around. There is a phone app, so if you want to see something in particular you can search and get the room number so that you can find it on the museum map. To see the whole museum would take days, and be exhausting, fun to wander and be surprised by what you find.
The fountain is long gone btw, if you are a fan of "From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler"

The museum is "Pay what you wish" that is hard to figure out from the admission kiosk.
