Owner description: The Tenement Museum preserves the history of immigration through the personal accounts of those who built lives in the Lower East Side. Visitors can view restored apartments from the 19th and 20th centuries, walk the historic neighborhood, and interact with residents to learn the stories of generations of immigrants who helped shape the American experience. The museum is available by guided tour only. Each tour focuses on a specific theme and takes visitors to a different area of the building or neighborhood.

I really enjoyed my visit here and I took the Irish Outsiders tour. It was very informational and we had a great tour guide who was so knowledgable. There are a few different tours that you can choose from but book your tickets early. They sell out very fast. This is a must do in NYC.

Very interesting as it is almost a living museum, but it is not cheap and tours are limited and can book up fast. There are several different tours, depending on time of day. Although the building is the same, the history lesson is slightly different, tracing different real families.

VERY enthusiastic guides who's passion for the place comes through clearly. My son was very happy with this tour and very intrigued about life as an immigrant in the usa. A must see for someone who's family are immigrants

Did the "Irish experience." Our quirky guide, Kate (?) (Forgot her name, but she was fabulous), in her funky 50's hat, made it so interesting with her smart commentary, and lots of genuine enthusiasm and passion. Middle school and even elem school kids would get a lot out of it. By asking good questions, and thru the use of short songs and stories, our guide cleverly gave us great insight into the struggles of poverty and the origins and cycles of racism and discrimination from the immigrant perspective as we toured the tenement apartments.

Don't miss it!! Highly recommend for families. It should be ranked as a major attraction along with Lady Liberty. Honestly, you'll get more out of Tenement Museum than Ellis Island in a lot less time. Great gift shop, too.
