Owner description: The Tenement Museum preserves the history of immigration through the personal accounts of those who built lives in the Lower East Side. Visitors can view restored apartments from the 19th and 20th centuries, walk the historic neighborhood, and interact with residents to learn the stories of generations of immigrants who helped shape the American experience. The museum is available by guided tour only. Each tour focuses on a specific theme and takes visitors to a different area of the building or neighborhood.

I have been to NYC countless times +just learned about this amazing place .
You go on organized profesional tours of different areas of these former tenement housing for families in late 19th century. it is fascinating to see the history with such detail. It is great for all ages above 10 .
There are multiple tours but we did Hard Times + Shop Life which were both excellent esp the former.
You can buy tickets online before which will save some time. You need to plan for this to see the tours you are interested in.

They have recreated tenement life from 140 years ago and later, in an old tenement building that is little changed from then. the interesting thing is that the slums aren't just a fictional invented homes... they researched the actual people who lived there and recreated their lives... sometimes with furniture which they traced and found. A must see if you are downtown New York City.

It was a very interesting experience; the guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the Museum and answered many questions. There are many different types of tours to choose from, depending on what aspect of the Museum you are interested in learning about and the tours vary in length. We took the tour that focused on the home life of the immigrants; it lasted about an hour and was very well done.

This very interesting. I had my 87 year old uncle who remembered what it was like to live in the tenement building. Walk around the neighborhood when you are finished.

The tour was very rushed - too many tours happening at once and the guide a little bossy and didn't answer questions very comprehensively.. The bookshop and film shown there were the best part of the experience. there was a huge collection of NY history books
