Owner description: The Tenement Museum preserves the history of immigration through the personal accounts of those who built lives in the Lower East Side. Visitors can view restored apartments from the 19th and 20th centuries, walk the historic neighborhood, and interact with residents to learn the stories of generations of immigrants who helped shape the American experience. The museum is available by guided tour only. Each tour focuses on a specific theme and takes visitors to a different area of the building or neighborhood.

We went in a 2-family group and were joined by a third family for the tour. Children from 7-12 attended along with the adults. The tour guide was fantastic, patiently answering questions and providing a lot of detail. I would highly recommend the museum and this tour and look forward to going on other tours.

Very eye opening to see how immigrants lived several years ago. Makes you appreciate everything we have from running water, indoor plumbing, indoor toilets, and of course air conditioning, and heat. Loved it, will definitely go back to see other dwellings next visit!

Everyone can gain knowledge by visiting this museum.
Amazing suffering and tough living conditions for those who immigrated
to NY in the 19th and early 20th century.
A must see if you are in New York or plan a visit

The Lower East-Side Tenement Museum has preserved an original tenement building in the same state it was left when it closed down in the 1930s. This is not a museum where you wander around exhibits on your own, but rather are taken by a tour guide through the original Tenement building and nearby city streets to get a glimpse of what life was like for immigrant families living in New York's lower East Side in the late 19th and early 20th century. Great for kids, especially if they are 9-10 or older. Educational, fun, and a different experience from most museum going. Admission is a bit expensive, but I highly recommend it.
