Owner description: The Tenement Museum preserves the history of immigration through the personal accounts of those who built lives in the Lower East Side. Visitors can view restored apartments from the 19th and 20th centuries, walk the historic neighborhood, and interact with residents to learn the stories of generations of immigrants who helped shape the American experience. The museum is available by guided tour only. Each tour focuses on a specific theme and takes visitors to a different area of the building or neighborhood.

Went with our family with two teen sons, who also thought it was well worth it. We went on the "hard times" tour, but I am sure any tour would be enjoyable. One of the highlights of our trip!

It was an uncomfortably hot day but this didn't distract for our tour. We did the Sweat shop tour it demonstrated how a family would live in a three room apartment which during the day was also a factory making ladies dresses. There were other tours available and a film to watch before you took the tour. Very educational and well worth the sweat.

We went to the tenement Museum with my daughter around midday only to find that tickets had sold for the day so we purchased tix for the next morning and came back . I am glad we did as it was a very informative and interesting tour about the migrants and the hardships they endured, It came to life as we stood in the actual aptm and listened to a recording of a woman who had lived there.
It got very hot inside as the temperature was abt 90 that day so beware.
They have a few tours to choose from .

We went to the Tenement Museum on July 5th, one of the warmest days in NYC this year. We booked the First floor tour. We were so lucky because this is the only tour that is air conditioned. Well, it was wonderful. it was 90 minutes of the history of the lower East Side. We all go to Europe and see all the historic sights, but when do we learn the history of our own country? it was wonderful. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. This is a must see when in NYC. When the weather is cooler, and we will be in NYC, we will go back and take the tours of the other floors.

Our guide was young, perky, and it seemed to me harped a little to much on the negative "attributes" of the Irish. Perhaps, with the last name O'Brien, I'm a bit too aware of all the positive contributions the Irish have made to this country, and I feel our Irish heritage offers a wee bit more than just drinking, bribing politicians, and keening at funerals.

We left and then went on to the Liberty Tower and the WTC Memorial, where, if you want to see what the Irish have given to this country, read the names of all the firefighters engraved on the memorial wall surrounding the reflection pool.
