Owner description: The Tenement Museum preserves the history of immigration through the personal accounts of those who built lives in the Lower East Side. Visitors can view restored apartments from the 19th and 20th centuries, walk the historic neighborhood, and interact with residents to learn the stories of generations of immigrants who helped shape the American experience. The museum is available by guided tour only. Each tour focuses on a specific theme and takes visitors to different areas of our two historic tenement buildings or neighborhood.

We packed a lot of things into our NYC trip, and this was my favorite. Although it cost more than I'd like to pay (there are plenty of free NYC activities), it was worth the money.

It was only an hour long, with nonstop history and experiences of NYC immigrants. Our tour guide, Raaj, kept the entire group engaged. He didn't talk at us, but with us. We had conversations about the experiences of the tenants, and everyone participated. Our group had about 15 people from all over the world, so there was so much perspective. I really want to thank Raaj for not going through a script, but really making our tour special for our group.

We had a couple well-behaved kids in our group. The younger one looked real bored. I wouldn't suggest bringing kids who are too young to understand or teens who are too cool to care.

They have taken an old tenement building, show you what it looked like before renovation and then renovated rooms to show you how specific families lived. The research is amazing and being in the re-created space, in an actual tenement, with information about real people brings the history alive. This is what New York is about, or at least an important part of New York. You chose a specific tour, ours was "Sweatshop" about Eastern European Jewish immigrants. I thought I already knew a lot, but there was lots of detail about the lives of these folks that I learned. Its done in small groups, so its easy to ask questions and interact. I would love to go again and try a different family/tour. The bookstore is also amazing, focused on immigrant population.

This is a fantastic way to get a better appreciation for what life was like for immigrants at the turn of the century. Our knowledgeable guide was evidently passionate about the lives of the tenants of this building and I was genuinely moved by the stories we heard. The fact that you are only allowed in in small pre-booked groups meant that we could ask questions and spend quality time getting to know the families that lived there so long ago.

Great little museum. We really enjoyed our visit and learned a lot. Go to Katz' Deli around the corner for a meal afterward. It makes a great afternoon in NYC, especially on a rainy day.

The staff is charged up about visitors leaving with an authentic experience of how and what the immigrants felt as they lived in lower Manhattan. Well versed, very articulate and extremely interesting NYC factoids. A MUST see for local history buffs and international visitors alike!
