Owner description: The Tenement Museum preserves the history of immigration through the personal accounts of those who built lives in the Lower East Side. Visitors can view restored apartments from the 19th and 20th centuries, walk the historic neighborhood, and interact with residents to learn the stories of generations of immigrants who helped shape the American experience. The museum is available by guided tour only. Each tour focuses on a specific theme and takes visitors to a different area of the building or neighborhood.

Having visited before, this was even better and had new information than the last time I visited. They keep improving this museum where so many Americans got their start.

We took the "Shop Life" tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and did a great job on the tour. Unlike what you might expect from a "museum tour", there was a bit of interaction between guests and our guide. The tour covered several shops that had been in the one building being toured, and explained some of the history of the neighborhood and the city.

We will definitely check out some of the other tours on a future visit.

I signed up for the "Hard Times" tour. Very educational and informative. The tour is only about an hour, so it's easy to fit this in to any itinerary. Our guide was great (Ryan?). With so many more things to see there, I will definitely keep this on my list of must dos in NYC.

A real insight into the past, see how the immigrants lived through various eras and how the area changed to accommodate the needs of the community

We visited in May and did the sweatshop worker and hard times tours. Both were really interesting and revealling, our educators were both knowledgeable and entertaining, its also good to see the US reveal some of their less perfect side! Other American facilities can be relentless in their civic pride, this was a genuine open door to the really rough life of these Lower East Siders.... Thoroughly recommend a visit
