Owner description: The Tenement Museum preserves the history of immigration through the personal accounts of those who built lives in the Lower East Side. Visitors can view restored apartments from the 19th and 20th centuries, walk the historic neighborhood, and interact with residents to learn the stories of generations of immigrants who helped shape the American experience. The museum is available by guided tour only. Each tour focuses on a specific theme and takes visitors to different areas of our two historic tenement buildings or neighborhood.

History often preserves the lives of the rich, but it's harder to see how more humble folk lived. This is an eye opener. A genuine tenement was saved and restored and you walk in these tiny rooms and they tell you about real families that lived there and their histories and it is amazing and humbling and profound, to think how our great grandparents and their generation lived...
I've been there several times and heard quite a few of their stories and loved them all. And each time my guests have been impressed too. I took some older relatives and there are a lot of stairs, so be warned, but even they found it well worth it.

Worth a visit to find out about the history of one tenement building and the families who lived there. Excellent commentary.

There is a lot of standing and more chairs could be provided for those who need it.

Our daughter lives in NYC, after several visits and seeing all the regular NYC sights several times, Broadway, art museums, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island etc. We started looking for something different. Sure glad we found the Tenement Museum. Very educational and a real insight on how the immigrants lived. They offer several tours, we have done two of them, The "Sweat Shop Workers" and "Hard Times". We are glad we did the two different tours. However they do over lap on several things. So if you only have time for one or decide to do only one. I would suggest taking the "Sweat Shop Workers" tour. Also it is best to get your tickets in advance, the groups are very limited in size. Hope you enjoy the tour as much as we did.

This is a great tour to get a sense of what New York was like for immigrants who came to America. They take you through restored apartments and talk about the people who lived there. You can choose the type of tour you want to take. We took a tour about an Irish family that had lived in one of the apartments. It was interesting to hear about their daily lives while walking through the actual apartment they lived in. Very different from our lives today! Great for kids!
