Owner description: The Tenement Museum preserves the history of immigration through the personal accounts of those who built lives in the Lower East Side. Visitors can view restored apartments from the 19th and 20th centuries, walk the historic neighborhood, and interact with residents to learn the stories of generations of immigrants who helped shape the American experience. The museum is available by guided tour only. Each tour focuses on a specific theme and takes visitors to a different area of the building or neighborhood.

While the history of NY was detailed. I felt the staff was too rehearsed and didn't add to the experinece but took away from it all.

We did the Shop Life tour, a fantastic young lady took us in to a bar and encouraged a conversation about how things might have been, what people did etc.
We then looked at how that bar became a shop and the people who lived and worked there
Finishing up with the most amazing interactive computer based finale (yea I know)
It came highly recommended and it did not disappoint
Next time I am in NY I will arrange to do 2 or 3 more of their tours

We loved the detail involved in the two tours we took. The tour guides were knowledgeable and interesting.

You really get a strong feeling of what it must have been like to live in the ghetto that was the lower east side. We took the "Sweat Shop" tour which brought us into the house on Orchard Street and a discussion of the piece work that was done in tiny little spaces with no water or electricity from sunup to sundown six days a week. The museum shop is lovely and they have a nice video inside that provides an overview. When I am next in New York, I hope to get back there for some of the additional tours and the neighborhood walk. It doesn't hurt that Vanessa's Dumpling House is just a few blocks away!

This was an extraordinary tour that really gave you a fascinating glimpse into the hardships families faced and history of NYC at the turn of the century. It was a very thorough tour with an excellent and knowledgeable guide. What truly took the tour from good to great was the number of stories shared about of real families that lived in the tenement at the turn-of-the-century which brought history to life. We learned so much about city life in that period, and my daughter who was 12 at the time found the tour and the stories that were shared engrossing, so much s, that we purchased a number of books from the Tenement Museum store because she wanted to learn more.

We had taken the Immigrant Tour, which was a poignant depiction of the difficult life that Immigrants faced when coming to this country at that time. I found the tour profound in many ways and a testament to what made America so great.

I would put this tour as a must on a visit to NYC - it puts the glitz and glamour of NYC into perspective by providing an alternative view on the hardships people faced and the dreams the country was made on.
