Owner description: The Tenement Museum preserves the history of immigration through the personal accounts of those who built lives in the Lower East Side. Visitors can view restored apartments from the 19th and 20th centuries, walk the historic neighborhood, and interact with residents to learn the stories of generations of immigrants who helped shape the American experience. The museum is available by guided tour only. Each tour focuses on a specific theme and takes visitors to a different area of the building or neighborhood.

We took the Hard Times tour and our guide was wonderful. The tour really came to life standing in the same apartment once occupied by immigrants and listen to the story of their life in that apartment and on the lower east side.

So I just got back from NY and did the "Hard Times" tour at the tenement museum. Definitely worth a visit. The tours are pegged to a 4th grade level - which I do understand, because there is such a variety of people - and have more "touchy feely" flavor than my own personal preference - which just wants lots more facts and history and details - but they are still very interesting.

Our guide was excellent. Very knowledgeable and nimble-minded - able to answer lots of questions. (You try to explain the Great Depression in 20 seconds to an 11 year old Danish boy who has never heard of it!)

After lunch I walked back past and listened a bit as the Irish tour was in the outside privy yard. The guide was giving a good background on the potato famine. Again - well done, but I wish there was a tour for people who already had a good knowledge already and just wanted to explore the whole phenomena of tenement living.

If you're hungry - the tour ends by putting you out right by the "Congee Village" Chinese restaurant, which was really good and very inexpensive.

Having been to this museum I now understand how the pieces fit together. How indeed the immigrants from so many places in the last two centuries have pieced such a unique city together. A great insight. Be sure to book as there are limited numbers in the apartments.
