Awesome day out, stood in queues for two hours to get on the ferry, no chance of getting in the crown, tickets sold for three months time were available. Alright if you don't mind taking chances on weather. No shade or shelter. Audio talk is long winded but interesting. Queued for less time to come home. Great photos despite not getting up to the crown, took most of a day with two small kids. We didn't do Ellis island, as we needed a more leisurely day, we did finish with tiffanys on wall at and little Italy for dinner. If you can do 911 while your down this end of New York.

Have only been over to Lady Liberty maybe 2-3 times over the many years of coming to NYC.
I would highly recommend this place to be on the top of your list for things to see and do in New York City; a short subway ride to Battery Park from anywhere in the city. Pay for your ferry tickets, with many options to go to Ellis Island or just over to Statue of Liberty, both places are great to visit, especially if this is your first time to NY.
Definitely go early in the morning to avoid the rush of people later in the day, and buy your ticket ahead of time on line if you want to go up to her crown.

This was so exciting for my 8 year old and myself too. I did learn that you must reserve entering the statue months in advance, so we did not get to go in. The experience, however of seeing it and then taking the ferry across the water to the island was very emotional as I thought how my ancestors felt coming here as immigrants!!

We were only in town for a short trip so we had a one-day window to visit the Statue of Liberty. On that particular day (a Sunday) we took the subway for a 30 minute ride to the Statue stop. Once there, we trekked to where you buy tickets for the ferry as well as touring inside the Statue of Liberty. When we got there, all tours were closed (not sold out). Since we had never been, we didn't really understand that there isn't anything else to do on the island if you can't tour the Statue. So we paid the expensive ferry fee to go over to see it. Once there, we walked around the Statue of Liberty (again not realizing you can't go up to it or even inside of it). There is a small gift shop outside with a very expensive cafe. That's it. Was it a sight to see? Yes, absolutely! But when you have children with you, it's quite the journey to get out there only to be disappointed by no entry into the Statue at all. I guess my main complaint here is that I wish when we bought ferry tickets and inquired about tour tickets that it would have been explained to us the difference, especially seeing children with us. We didn't know any better to ask the questions and really relied on the knowledge of the folks at the ticket counter. Just make sure you have tickets AHEAD of time so you can actually go into the Statue of Liberty and to make sure it's even open that day.

Best seen from the bay, the island itself isn't really memorable. Staten Island Ferry or opne of the bay cruises will gove you the best view of the Lady, unless you wanna climb the loads of stairs :)
