I stayed at Michael NY for 4 nights in November 2008 on a visit to New York. I'd stayed a 3 nights in a midrange hotel further downtown, near Central Park, before moving up to Michael's. Have to say Michael's was better value by far and I enjoyed my stayed very much. Everything was clean, a decent breakfast was provided, Micahel was very helpful and knowledgable and made himself available in the mornings, the other guests were friendly and an interesting assortment on nationalities, the house and the area had a lot of fascinating history, the list goes on....I really cant think of anything negative to say except maybe it is, as one poster commented, a decent ride on the subway to the tourist hotspots downtown, although I think this might be a plus for a lot of people.

This place was really nice to stay at.
The owner is very friendly and tries to make your stay as uncomplicated as possible. Rooms and bathrooms are clean, the kitchen is very nice and provides coffee machine etc. The surrounding area is very quiet at night and offers some really good restaurants and takeaway food.
Only negativ point ist the long way to downtown Manhatten, which will take you about 30 min including the walk to the metro.
I can really recommend staying at Michael's place!

It is my second time here and I returned not only because is affordable but also cause Michael is unbelievably helpful and accomodating, not to mention that whenever you write him he answers almost straight away.

The rooms are simple, the bathrooms are shared and usually I dislike that but since the place is small (4 rooms) everybody does his part to keep things very clean and tidy and when they dont, Michael takes care of it.

The place also has free internet access (wireless too) and is located in Harlem but on a side street that is actually quite charming and the neighbourhood itself is not that scary at all, even late at night.

Well, if I will ever be back in New York, I've no doubts where I'm going to stay.
