Owner description: No need to settle for just looking at the stars - this $210 million planetarium is a virtual joyride through the universe.

The planetarium building is very innovative, with a huge IMAX theater doubling as a model of the sun. The planets of our solar system, built to scale, are clustered around the sun model. Unfortunately, the exhibits were out of order, so it was not much of a learning experience. Admission to the planetarium includes access to the rest of the American Museum of Natural History. At more than $25 for an adult admission, I did not think that the star show was informative enough to warrant that fee. It also disturbs me that patrons are herded into the gift shop after the planetarium show is over.

For someone who has been captivated by cosmology and astronomy since college, the planetarium show and the much shorter Big Bang film were both disappointing. Both demonstrations, while extremely well done from a technological point of view, assumed too much knowledge on the part of the average viewer, failed to knit together the different concepts presented in the shows, and ultimately failed to adequately explain the scientific fundamentals in a way that could make sense to the average viewer. The planetarium show will certainly leave you with the impression that what's going on in outer space with the stars is important, but that's about all.

Wow! What a rush. I've seen five planetariums in my time but not like this one. Whoppi's voice was awesome for the task and you felt like you were in space. I agree, the seats are not laid back enough.

This is one place I will not get tired of! The show is so awesome it can give one goosebumps! One can imagine oneself floating in space among the stars. I wish the seats could lean back for the best viewing position...
There are more to see and do as this is within the museum. This is, hands-down, a place to take your kids to when you are in town.

We went with a 7 and 9 year old. This was their first trip to a planetarium, and they had a great time. Certainly a great activity for young children in New York, especially on a day with poor weather. This is of couse within the museum, so plenty of other attractions to see before and after the planetarium.
