“Good mexican food”

We found that crowded place and we really loved it! The food is very good, and you won't leave the place hungry! Plates are so big!
I highly recommend the fajita, the steak one, very good meat.

“An excellent choice for good Mexican food in NYC.”
Reviewed October 27, 2013

We were looking for good Mexican food within walking distance of our hotel in Mid-town and found El Centro, which proved to be excellent food at very reasonable prices.

“The food is great...If you don't mind waiting/crowded/loud”
Reviewed October 27, 2013

I have been a regular at this restaurant since it opened years ago and at that time would have given it a 5 out of 5. In the last couples years it has gotten uncomfortably crowded and loud moving it to a 4 of 5. So why the bump down to a 3 of 5? I feel that El Centro has become a little too sure of itself, demonstrated in management's complete disregard for customer loyalty. As someone who has dined here about once/week (for many years) you would think that once in a blue moon they might do something- anything- to say thanks for being such a devoted customer. Nope. Not a thing. I'm not even talking about offering a free drink or even a complimentary guacamole (although that would be nice and typical of other restaurants that value regular patronage), but just a simple acknowledgement that says, "these guys are long-time, loyal customers- let's not take them for granted". Quick example: they adhere to a somewhat standard policy of not seating incomplete parties. They know we come in all the time and there are often 3 of us, but if only 2, we say 2- we have never said there are going to be 3 and not had the 3rd show up within a few minutes. If there are clearly empty tables and no immediate wait, couldn't the management, just once, bend the rules for customers with a proven track record? I guess not.

So, why do we return? The food and a couple of great, friendly waiters. Again, to be clear, my gripe is with management, not individual servers/bartenders/bussers who all are generally great. There have been several times when we've thought of never returning, but then the margaritas and food here keep pulling us back- yes, they are slightly addictive and so much better than any other Mexican joint in the area. But, as soon as another equally tasty place opens up, it may be goodbye to El Centro.

“Solid Mexican Food with Fun Atmosphere”
Reviewed October 22, 2013

I actually live next door to El Centro, so I eat here quite often. The staff is friendly, the food is good, and the atmosphere/decor is entertaining. They also have great margaritas. The only reason I don't rate them 5 stars is because the prices are on the high side -- probably average for NYC, but I still end up paying $50+ for two people.

“Beautiful food, Perfect last night in NYC”
Reviewed October 12, 2013

We tried to eat here on our first night in NYC after we wandered past looking for a different restaurant and preferred the look of this place. It was packed and had a long wait so we decided to try it another night and were so glad we did!

We chose to go a bit earlier this time and on a Sunday night. We sat outside, which although on the street seemed to have a nice atmosphere. We were immediately served with a massive bowl of tortilla chips and salsa. The drinks took a long time to arrive - I think they had been forgotten about so we got another free bowl of tortilla chips.

I ordered steak enchiladas and my wife, who is a vegetarian ordered veggie fajitas (for the first time on our US trip she was spoilt for choice!) Wow we got such a plateful and all of it was so tasty. Both were amazing and incredibly tasty and also very reasonably priced.

We soon found out why it was so packed and how it has such good reviews. When we return we hope to eat there again.
