“Don't confuse with Best Western”

Had a very difficult time getting a hotel room in this small town. Lots of out of state oil workers here with no rooms available. Thought we might be sleeping in the car, but when we arrived at 930 the desk clerk said he had been waiting on someone who hasn't showed up or called about their room and he gave it to us. It was a little scary since the hotel lobby area smelled simply awful, thought the room would smell the same way. This was a motel with a regular "key" lock, like you seen in the movies. Really old and dingy but in the end we were happy to have a room and the rate was very reasonable, they could have charged way more than what we paid

Room Tip: This was a "motel" in the heart of town so good location I guess...not many rooms availabl...

Hotel was clean, owners take good care of their facility and they are friendly. They saved our situation with giving us the room hard to find last minute, allowed our small dog. We were after 12 hours drive on October 2, 2012, and had huge disappointment shortly before with another hotel in Carlsbad we originally reserved via internet. That was Executive Inn and Suites - don't ever consider that one. So, we recommend Great Western inn & Suites ,it's not new one but very quiet, safe and clean, good parking, comfortable.

My wife & I had made a reservation at another motel two months in advance, but due to a leak, we were rerouted to Great Western. It is an older motel, but what impressed me was the honesty of the staff. I was prepared to pay what the other motel cost ($100+), and actually handed the desk clerk the reservation paper, but he told me their rate was cheaper by about $30. The room itself had two queen beds, a microwave, small fridge, and TV, which I thought was certainly reasonable for the price. The breakfast was limited but adequate for us: two kinds of cereal, three kinds of sweet rolls, orange juice, coffee, and milk. One thing I would have preferred would have been a deadbolt lock on the door. There were two locks, one in the doorknob and a sliding bar type, but most motels have a deadbolt lock as well. All in all it was perfectly adequate for us, and we did save $30.

Due to oil conference in town, it was only room available and the reviews nearly had us driving to Roswell but we thought it looked OK so we took at chance and it was clean, comfortable and close to town. We went into town to The Red Roof BBQ for a really delicious and very reasonable meal. Carlsbad is not an attractive town but worth a stop

This is a Mom and Pop operation. They need a lot of updating and are still using bedspreads. The corners of the room had never seen a vacuum. While the beds were clean there were none of the usual amenities. No hair dryer, old bathtub. The TV was awful and in a cupboard where the door would not stay open. We were here the night of the debates and could not get the station we wanted. Not a big choice of stations. While the outside of the place looked pretty nice the inside was disappointing. Just old. Lobby outdated too with dusty fake flowers and the most ugly curtains which looked as if they belonged in a Victorian brothel. And, they had actual yale keys which had to be returned to the lobby in the morning. The couple who were cleaning the room might have been part of the family but they were no spring chickens and our rooms were connected but we had to keep swinging that damn cupboard door out of our way to get past it. What they did have was a lovely indoor pool that looked well kept but we had no time to use it.

Room Tip: Go to a franchise for the same money. More predictable.

There were 5 of us in one room and we needed a extra cot for the fifth person so when we ask he told us we can have only 3 people per room so we said ok and went back to our room so he calls us with an attitude for 2 of us to get out so he made us get another room and was a total disrespectful person....way overpriced ....rooms aren't too clean and aren't nice .

Somebody wrote that "you do get what you pay for", and this could be true if you'd pay 40-50$. Like all places near National Parks, this one overcharges too.

1)First of all, it was not clean and it smelled not great. We found ants and mold in the bathroom, and cotton swabs placed (by the previous guest?) IN the wall, where holes were. I should have taken pictures..but it was disgusting. No hair dryer. Old but working microwave. The refrigerator came handy.
2)Pool is big, but it is open only in the afternoon. We went once, and it needs some maintenance in my opinion. There is some rusty stuff indeed.
3)They tried to charge us $10 more than the reservation for no reason. My husband got mad and in the end they did not.

Overall, we slept. It was not noisy.

Next time we would pay a little more, though, and go somewhere else. Especially for the cleanliness, since we have a little one.
