“Worst motel experience ever”
Reviewed January 6, 2014

We booked Christmas Day and the 26th well in advance, wanting to explore Carlsbad Caverns and concerned about availability. Upon arrival in early evening we were "upgraded" to a recently renovated room. It had a used Kleenex on the vanity, dirt and recent paint on the floor, and exactly 6 sheets of toilet paper. We fetched more toilet paper, went to dinner, and when we went to bed at 10 PM discovered the heater would not work. (At home I keep temperature at 55 - so we did not notice earlier.) We complained and night manager said we would not be charged.

We stayed in room tandt night we slept in sweaters/pants and changed rooms the next day. Next room looked better - but toilet overflowed with minimal load. I walled off spillage with towels, maintenance plunged toilet, and maid came. She did not mop - only dry mopped, and did not replace towels.

As a final insult, when we checked out, we were told that the General Manager had overruled night manager - we were charged full price for night 1 and given half off the second.

This motel is really expensive for what you get. It's a very average motel. Nothing fancy, however that's what the oil boom in New Mexico has caused in Carlsbad. All the motel chains are taking advantage of travelers to the area. One positive is that the staff was helpful and the manager took care of a couple problems we had with the room. The breakfast was a little better than the average Best Western motel. Hot eggs, pancakes, and sausage. The yogurt was actually a brand I recognized. The breakfast attendant was happy to get us hot chocolate instead of coffee.

Driving up - it didn't look great. I was wrong. This place is great. The bed was very comfortable. We had dinner in the restaurant. It is a pretty room and the food was good. Breakfast the next morning was excellent with great eggs. Way above our expectations. I'd stay there again. The bathroom was noisy but the sleeping room was quiet. There is no door (or a complete wall) to the bathroom but it didn't matter. They layout worked fine.

Stayed for three nights. The maid service was not great. There was hair on the bathroom floor when we arrived. The sheets were inside out and upside down. The worst thing was the landscaper started up a fork lift right outside our room about 7:30 in the morning and proceeded to move landscape rocks back and forth in front of our room. When we mentioned these issues the manager took one nights charges off our bill, took responsibility and apologized for the problems.

This hotel is not worth the price but all the hotels in Carlsbad are over priced. The oil companies in the area have driven up the prices. It's a shame for those of us traveling. Had we paid the normal rates this would have been a good stay. The cleaning staff very friendly. Front desks employee needs customer service. Breakfast was good, bed comfortable and room clean. We took the Carlsbad lantern tour and the Christmas on the Pecos. Both excellent!

I travel at least one week per month and this was the worst hotel I've stayed at anywhere in the US this year. The room rate was high, room quality poor, and had to deal with barking dogs all night three of the nights. I even got to enjoy a pile of dog crap right outside my door two of the days. Staff said they'd talk to dog owner, but it continued nightly. I would have stayed anyplace else, but other hotels in town were even further outside of per diem due to oil rush in region.

We stayed at this hotel in order to enjoy Christmas on the Pecos. We found the location convenient. There were a lot of oil or mine workers staying there with trucks all over the place. Most left for work early, so we were awakened by that as well as a few car alarms during the night. I felt the $150 nightly charge to be too high for the hotel. The service was excellent, both at the front desk and in the dining area. Found the room to be clean, and comfortable. Breakfast was average, but again the service was very good.
