I stayed here for one night while checking out the national parks. As everyone has already mentioned, the hotel mainly hosts oil & gas people, so you can expect it to be a little blue collar. However, I think the hotel handles it reasonably well - it was pretty clean and with good service. I wouldn't pay cash to stay here ever, but with points it was a good value.

Just want to WARN everyone, my daughter slept in a hideaway sofa at this hotel and about 24 hours later about 25 bed bug bites showed up in different areas of her legs. Creepy!
A lovely bonus after they charged us $350 for the room.

The staff was tremendously friendly and helpful. I was put off by all the Hindu god statues and pictures on the main floor. The pool area was nice and cool despite an outside temp of 100 degrees. The breakfast staff was so helpful, even offering a tray for me to bring food up to my room. The room had real queen-sized beds! Unfortunately anywhere I stood in the shower squeaked as though there were no support under it. My family and I all agreed that we wondered if we'd fall through to the room below us when we took showers. The hallway carpets need to be shampooed badly. The parking is far too small for the size of the hotel.

Our family — 2 adults, 2 teen boys — stayed here for two nights during a recent road trip through New Mexico. According to the reviews, this is one of the best places in Carlsbad. It’s not fantastic, but there are only so many options. FYI - Carlsbad is home to A TON of oil & gas activity. In my experience, hotels that accommodate O&G personnel tend to be less than stellar — and this hotel does accommodate them. The parking lot is full of big trucks, the floors are dingy from dirty work boot traffic and the men are rough looking and rude. Their looks and comments toward my wife were less than gentlemanly. I recognize that this is not necessarily the hotel’s fault, but it is worth mentioning.

PRICE — This hotel is way overpriced but since there are limited options in Carlsbad, they pretty much have you by the cojones. We have stayed in much nicer places for a lot less.

SERVICE — The service was great. The ladies that checked us in were friendly and knowledgable They offered us fresh-baked cookies and made several restaurant suggestions. The lady that runs the breakfast area was attentive and kind. The housekeeping staff always said hello and asked if we needed anything. Even the maintenance man was very nice.

CLEANLINESS — Due to the O&G traffic, the hotel’s rooms, floors, hallways and elevator could have been a lot cleaner overall. The dining area was always very clean however. The towels and bed linens were also clean. The bathroom was not spotless, but not intolerable.

ROOM — We reserved a room with two doubles. Each bed had 4 very soft, comfy pillows. The beds were more firm than we prefer, but not terrible. Internet was fast and worked all the time. AC worked great. We requested an extra cot for one of our boys but none were available because all the O&G people were using them. We did not use the indoor pool, hot tub or business center.

FOOD — The dining area was very clean, the food stations were all stocked and everything was adequately prepared. They offered lots of options - hot pancakes, cinnamon rolls, scrambled eggs, cereal, oatmeal etc. All of it was quite good. Breakfast ends at 9:30 which is too early, I think, especially for people who prefer to sleep late (we do).

LOCATION — It is located on the Northeast side of town, which is not the side closest to Carlsbad Caverns. But the caverns are around 25 miles outside of the town anyway, so another few miles is negligible. There is a McAllister’s Deli within walking distance and many other eating places nearby.

If the hotel were cleaner, and if there were no O&G patrons, I would give this 4 stars. But those things, combined with the high price knocked it down to three.

Dear treysprinkle,

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us. I am very delighted that our hotel staff was able to provide you with a satisfying service on many aspects of our facility. It is always our top priority to make sure that we meet your needs when it comes to clean and comfortable environment and adequate breakfast. I am saddened that we fell short to your expectations on these areas during your recent stay.

It is certainly not our intent to inconvenient our guests with our rates but to provide options that make sense. None the less, this point has also taken into account for future pricing strategies. The hotels in Carlsbad are VERY expensive due to the oil and gas industry. The hotel itself was very nice and they had a large breakfast buffet. Our room was a "two room suite", but it was really just a single room that had a separate sitting area with a couch, table, and TV. Not what I would call a true two-room suite. Additional hotels are being built, so hopefully this will help to make the room prices a bit more reasonable. $300/night for a Holiday Inn Express is more than I pay for a five-star hotel in major cities.

The prices for lodging in Carlsbad are outrageous! However once you come to terms with that, this hotel offered us a great night's sleep. The bed was a true king size, with soft cool linens. The room was generous with space for my husband and I to navigate around each other and our luggage. An in room refrigerator allowed us to chill our water. This was our last hotel night after 17 days on the road. We had stayed at top brand name hotels throughout our journey, this one stood out as the best.

Room Tip: Hotel is on the main road through town, however the traffic noise did not bother us on the street si...

Pros: Check-in was quick and easy. The room was average size and the bed was comfortable. Cons: After a long drive we decided to use the Jacuzzi, unfortunately the knob to turn on the massaging jets was broken. I called the front desk from the house phone. The front desk guy came over and turned it on with a wrench, and asked us to bring the wrench back when we were done. After we were done in the jacuzzi we tried to take the elevator back to our room on the 4th Floor and much to our surprise the elevator door wouldn't open on the 1st floor. We called the front desk guy again.. and he stated that the elevator had been having service problems for a few days and a part was ordered, but it wouldn't be available for a few days. He was able to get the door opened on the first floor, so that we could go up. We only stayed one night. The following morning there was an "out of service" sign on the elevator. So, we had to carry our suitcases down four flights of stairs. I rated this property poor, Since I feel they should have mentioned the elevator problem and the pool/jacuzzi area needed some cleaning and maintenance.

Room Tip: Request a room to the back of the hotel if you want a quiet room. Ask if the elevator is operationa...
