“Echoing Iron Rooster”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 15, 2006

I stayed in this property 5 nights and used it as a base for visiting Carlsbad Caverns & Guadalupe. I just read Iron Rooster's review, and it sounds so familiar and accurate. However, these things didn't bother me. No question that most of the items in the room are worn-out and old, but still functional. The bed was adequately firm, the TV was fine and had a decent selection of stations, the heating worked, the refrigerator worked, the place is clean. I wasn't bothered by the road noise at all (and I am a light sleeper), and considering that almost all the motels are on that same road, I don't think this is a criterion for choosing a motel.

I was bothered that this hotel didn't honor the rates it publishes in the AAA tour book, but still, the rate is low.

If you're looking for someplace with newer furniture, with light fixtures where the sockets aren't dangling from the lamps, with a nicer looking bathroom, etc., this isn't the place for you. But if you just need basic accomodations, it will be adequate.

Carlsbad, NM is the typical characterless and dingy gateway town to a couple of fabulous national parks - Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mountains National Park. On a recent trip, my wife and I planned to make Carlsbad our base for the two parks. Having read Trip Advisor reviews, making a lodging choice ended up being a gut feel. Specifically, we chose to pass on Best Western Stevens Inn since they quoted an $89 rate in the new section - a rate too high for us given the really poor reviews. Finally, based on AAA's 2-diamond rating, a mention in Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel, and a low rate ($45+tax/night), we picked the Carlsbad Inn.

The room contained the basics - two double beds, a TV (with snowy reception on most channels), a dresser, a sofa, a table and chairs, nightstands, and an alarm clock. Suprisingly, a hair dryer, a fridge, and a microwave (though really old) were also provided. I supsect this is to make the AAA amenities rating criteria. Since we did not use any of these, it is hard to comment fairly on their condition.

Our first floor room, though it appeared clean and seemed to have new wall paint, reeked strongly of air freshner / disinfectant. The furniture was a little beat up, the lighting was dim, and the heating/cooling vents were visibly clogged. Strangely, the room had a newer heating/cooling floor unit (which we noticed on the outside of other rooms as well) but was not functional/hooked up. We used the old fashioned thermostat control for heating the room, which seemed to work allright. The closet had 3-4 thin metal hangers of which 2 were badly bent and unusable. The bathroom was admittedly clean but had really old fixtures with a terribly torn and dirty shower curtain. Both the sink and bathtub had open drains (really old stoppers were placed on a ledge). The shower head was full of white mineral deposit. The toilet was reasonably clean but the flush was challenging. It seemed to work intermittently - as in did not flush completely on each flush. We got it to work on every tird flush or so. The towels and bath mat were thread bare and shredding from the edges - they did not feel clean at all. The bed linens and blanket were ill-fitting and close to thread bare as well. A quick glance at the pillows made me wish I hadnt looked at all! A sign taped to TV indicating that it should not be unhooked and removed as it was connected to some master surveillance system made us chuckle as to the kind of people who pass through the motel.

As the motel sits on the main drag through town US180/US62, traffic noise is constant and quite unbearable. We barely slept. Next morning, we noticed the free continental breakfast comprised cheap, (cold) coffee and a box of doughnuts from Wal-Mart. Though continental breakfast qualifies as such in many motels, a little flair in its presentation may help make guests feel a little more welcome. We decided to change our plans and head north to Roswell for the next night, and thankfully, the owner was nice enough to allow us to check out and refund the second night's charge.

This stay was during a road trip through New Mexico and Texas for 10 days. By far, it was the most uncomfortable and rather scary stopover of all our stops. AAA's 2-diamond rating, in our opinion, is way off the mark and needs to be revisited. Even a 1-diamond rating would be a stretch. Budget Travel's mention of Carlsbad Inn failed to describe its condition, which was also very disappointing. At $45+tax, Carslbad Inn seems overpriced. The previous night we stayed at the Econo Lodge in Van Horn, TX for $59.99+tax/night (AAA 2-diamond) and the next night we stayed at the Days Inn in Roswell for $55+tax (also AAA 2-diamond; see reviews), which were both clean and very pleasant stays. We kept thinking that the owners simply needed to make some improvements to make the motel a much nicer place - new and clean sheets, pillows, and towels, and better lighting as a start would help tremendously. Lodging choices in Carlsbad are slim, but I suggest you risk it someplace else, unless the low rate is reason enough to rough it.

I stayed at this hotel because it claimed to have a 1 star rating from AAA. When I walked into the room it smelled and despite the claim of having new rooms there was no evidence of it. The air conditioning vent was clogged with dust but the bathroom was clean. The posted price was $29.00 (single) but since there were two of us it was $44.00. Before staying here I would ask to see the room first.

Recently I had the experience of sampling two of Carlsbad's 1* roadside motels. The motels in Carlsbad are generally old and of poor quality and they tend to "compete" based on dubious claims made on their roadside signs. For instance, this motel advertised "new" rooms (no evidence of this), a low rate that was not offered at registration (though the rate of $33 I paid was fair), and a "continental breakfast" that consisted of one box of donuts and coffee in the lobby (although this is what all the motels do). The furnishings in my room were somewhat beat up and consisted of two double beds, table and chairs, a fridge and microwave, large TV with good selection of stations, and, somewhat surprisingly for a 1* property, an alarm clock and hair dryer. The room was clean although I spotted and killed a cockroach in the nightstand. The climate control system consisted of a beaten-up thermostat in the room and I think it could only be used to heat and not air-condition the room. The amenities offered make this an acceptable 1* property but you can probably do better.
