Monday nights in Carlsbad mean few eating options, as many restaurants are closed. Our hotel warned us about this, so it is apparently well known. At Chili’s, we were told the wait was 45 minutes, and people in the lobby had been waiting an hour and 15 minutes. So we went to IHOP -- usually one of my favorite comfort food restaurants -- where we were glad to see empty tables through the glass window in the lobby. But we were confused to see 4-5 parties waiting in the lobby and to be told by the manager that it would be a 15 minute wait. We then sat and watched a clueless hostess ask the manager repeatedly why she could not seat people, the inept manager stand with his arms crossed as he watched the poorly managed mayhem around him, and waitresses complaining to the manager about being slammed with too many tables. We also saw waitresses clearing their own tables, making multiple trips to clear a single table because they were carrying dirty dishes by hand rather than with trays, bussing tubs, or carts. All this while the manager stood doing nothing. We thought about ordering carry out, but bailed with our sanity rather than watch the craziness any longer.
