“really cool site”
Reviewed July 31, 2012

You can hike to the top of the falls and sit in the pools. It is a bit of a drive but worth it. There is a place to have a picnic and enjoy the cool falls.

Great place to take the family for a day trip!!! Take an ice chest with food & drink, maybe a shade tent. Lots of fun!

“Fun, little adventure”
Reviewed July 18, 2012

You travel about 30 min taking twists, turns, dips in the road, along with the occasional cow blocking the way till you arrive at your destination. Sitting Bulls Falls is well maintained area with natural swimming pools. While small, and not too much swimming occured (more wading in water), its a nice place to cool down from the hot sun. Go see to take the scenic drive, enjoy the water, and learn about the history.

“Can't See If If You Can't Enter”
Reviewed July 15, 2012

I attempted to see Sitting Bull Falls twice while on a trip to see the caverns in Carlsbad, New Mexico. My family and I were unable to enter the park on our first attempt because the entrance gate was closed approximately 15 minutes earlier than the posted final closure time. On our second attempt, which occurred the following day, the entrance gate was closed with absolutely no announcement.

The issue I have with the gate closure is this: The winding drive from the main highway out of Carlsbad to the entrance gate of the park is long; very long. Once you're off the highway and on route to the park, there are posted two signs- both signs show pertinent details and entrance times. One of the signs is located almost immediately off the highway and the other sign is a bit of a ways in, but still some distance from the gate. It would behoove the locally employed rangers to inform perspective tourists of the park's closure on the first sign they have posted, or even the second sign they have posted, before any tourist happens to unknowingly make the long drive in. (This is not an unreasonable request.)

Sitting Bull Falls may be magnificent, but my family and I will never know. If the reason(s) for closing the park early or not opening it at all were valid, particularly if such reasons pose a risk to visitors, then the rangers responsible for such a decision should be commended for doing their job. However, those very rangers should also make that announcement visible on one of their first posted signs, and not with a closed gate that is located more than 40 minutes away.
