“Beautiful and educational”
Reviewed September 11, 2013

I'd visited around 35 years ago -- I was equally delighted on this second visit. A well-informed volunteer toured us through the Sandburgs' home (small fee for this). Grounds and paths are scenic and alone would be worth the visit. Goats, chickens and some friendly cats were a huge bonus.

“Captures the magic of region, Sandburg in part”
Reviewed August 4, 2013

I'd move in tomorrow...being a packrat and history lover like the Sandburgs. goats not so much. This is intriguing - the second house that NPS shows "as is," just as when the old folks left in 1973. Beautiful pre-Civil War home forthrightly displayed (Mrs S didn't like it too fancy). Wish I had more time to walk the grounds. Tour scheduling a little loose - the video wasn't bolted into it. Thus, would have enjoyed more Sandburg context - his lefty origins, their social group; and also about the builder, Memminger of the CSA cabinet. The young ranger's knowledge didn't seem too deep. Materials and Internet would do well to mention accessibility issues: it's a considerable hike up the hill and lots of stairs in the house. my wife waited at the bottom.

“Don't miss the goats!”
Reviewed August 4, 2013

The house is beautifully preserved, and the setting is gorgeous. We enjoyed the goat barn, the delightful goats, and the vegetable garden as much as we enjoyed the house itself.

“Not to miss historical site.”

Carl Sandburg was a gem. Meticulously maintained. Young children may be a bit bored, but they can run around the grounds. Check out the Flat Rock Playhouse nearby.
