After your hike in Capitol Reef, treat yourself to something from the various offerings here. This supplements income for the Park as there is no entrance fee for Capitol Reef (other than the fee on the honor system for the scenic drive). The pies are incredible--we detoured on our way home for another stop. They have individual ice cream cups to put on top of your pie or eat separately and old-time drinks. And then don't forget to take something home with you: bread, jam, pickled vegetables, scones....my mouth is watering just writing this! The house also contains historical information and various items for sale--recipe books, aprons, and the like. It's definitely worth a stop.

The Gifford Homestead is actually located within nearby Capitol Reef National Park and is part of the preserved, historic town of Fruita. It is not a place to get a full meal but they offer some excellent treats including fresh baked pies and scones, ice cream, gourmet sodas, fruit preserves and other assorted pickled and preserved items. Everything we tried was of excellent quality and reasonably priced and picnic tables are provided for you to enjoy your treat. Closed in winter, they are open in season from 8 am till 6 pm but don’t wait till the last minute as they often sell out of their signature two person pies.

There is a wonderful bakery/cafe inside the Gifford Homestead. (Looking around the house doesn't take long but its well worth it. ) I would highly recommend doing what we did - skip breakfast in torrey and instead get here early as soon as they open and feast on their coffee, delicious scones, pies and other wonderful edibles. we took our purchases outside and sat on their tables in the garden enjoying our breakfast while taking in the peace and quiet and majestic capitol reef scenery. what an experience. then we set off for our walk within the park. great day
