We took scenic highway 12 drive late in the afternoon one day a few weeks ago....we got tthere after driving road 24 after coming from Moab.
Road 24 is a beautiful road that will take you through the enchanted landscapes where you will have the opportunity to experince many monuments every side of the roadbefore passing throug Capitol Reef National Park...you will fly high and your sences will elevate your spirit.... Then after such experience, get into Scenic Route 12....... Is like a welcome to " an enchanted road that first will pass you throughone of the most beautiful forest I ever been... Full of acasia pines and white strait trees that will steal you eyes... But be careful while driving though the forest, as many wild deer will cross right in front of your car..so drive slow and enjoy...
The altitude is a factor,as you will be way over the 9k...
But after coming down...the other majestic beauty will be comming to your sight.....
It is beautiful, out of the expected, and a unique life experience

We drove this scenic Byway from Torrey to Bryce Canyon City and enjoyed it so much that the only regret we had was not to have planned a full day of sightseeing for this beautiful area of Utah ! We felt like driving in a National Park !
We recommend to download the route guide to Scenic Byway 12 , select priorities and establish an itinerary ! This way you will not miss small detours like the Burr trail in Boulder ! One advice though : avoid driving at night ! Twisty road , lots of deers , racoons ....

The road between Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef takes you on top of a peak with no guard rails for a couple miles. The speed limit is 30 I think, but I was going 20 down the middle of the road. It drops off on both sides of the windy road. Luckily there was no traffic coming the other way. I will never forget the trip but it was scary. It is a 5 for thrill and a 1 for scary.

We had read a little about this drive before going to Utah but did not really know what to expect. We drove the entire stretch between highways 89 and 24. Since there are not enough words to describe how beautiful the drive is I can only say HOLY COW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have driven all over the country and this is among the top 2 or 3 drives I have ever taken. It really is indescribable and pictures can not do justice to what you will see. If you are ever in this part of the country you must take a drive on this road. You can download a free route guide at http://www.scenicbyway12.com. Take your time and be sure to go on some of the hikes you will find listed in the guide. You will not regret it.

As you enter Route 12 from the west, you are treated with Red Rock Canyon, take a short walk around the visitor center. And go up a small climb to see what a different perspective you get. Of course do, Bryce Canyon and if nothing else do a short walk into the Queens Garden, again the perspective you get is unmatched. Slowly drive the Bryce Canyon Road and make sure you go slow enough to see the prairie dogs and the prong horn antelope and of course the mule deer.
Driving east at mile marker 17 there is a short walk into a falls.
Then at mile marker 75, take the time to do Calf creek falls walk. A relatively easy 3 mile walk into the falls, one way. We took an hour and a half to walk in, taking photos and all and an hour and 10 min out, resting and taking our time.
After, you survive the hogsback section of route 12 get off around,
mile mark 85, there is a short 11 mile drive off route 12 to slot canyon. This is a very short walk to see this lovely canyon.
You can ask at the museum for directions.
Then complete the rest of the 124 mile scenic byway.
