Often when we travel we like to look for what appear to be 'local favorites' when it comes to a place to eat. If you can find a local grill or restaurant that is popular with the locals it often proves to be both a good place to eat and reasonably priced. That was exactly the case when we decided to check out the Captain's Choice on a recent trip through Harkers Island NC.
We pulled in on a weekday right around dinner time and the place was already starting
to get busy. It was obvious that the owners and staff knew most of the people that were in for dinner that night (a very good sign!). I ordered a stuffed flounder dish that was absolutely great and my wife had another type of fresh fish with a bowl of their special recipe clam chowder. It was a unique soup, not the milk and cream based type full of potatoes, but also not the tomato and vegetable based type with a lot of veggies.
The woman attending the buffet area (who turned out to be one of the owners) commented to my wife that she seemed to like the chowder. After our chat with the owner's wife, we learned that the chowder was a local traditional recipe and that it had even been featured in one of the national cooking magazines. I'd hate to quote the magazine by name for fear of getting it wrong! But it was a unique recipe and was one of the best renditions we have ever tried.
The seafood was fresh, hot, well prepared, and served up by a friendly group of locals that made us feel welcome in their small town authentic coastal restaurant! It's in our plans for our next trip to the area.
Highly recommended! Small family style seafood with a local flair! Try it ! ! !
