Description: Darrell’s is a family-style seafood restaurant that’s been a favorite on Roanoke Island since 1960. Seafood is the definite specialty; the fried oysters are widely touted as the best anywhere, served with the traditional fixings of cole slaw, french fries and hush puppies. Locals know that Darrell’s does seafood right. Land food, children’s fare and light eaters’ dishes are also available. Darrell’s is now serving the best BBQ and BBQ Ribs fresh off an all narural wood fired smoker. Helpings are heaping and desserts are delicious, if you have room. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served Monday-Saturday and breakfast and lunch on Sunday’s.

“Good, local seafood”
Reviewed May 11, 2009

I've been coming to the Outer Banks just about all my 45 years and I've been eating faithfully at Darrell's for about the last 20 of them. Darrell's is not about pretense, if you are looking for high dollar cuisine and overpriced wine this is not your place. They do offer very fresh, local seafood in season. Some of it's fried, some of it's broiled but all of it's good, and it is very reasonbly priced. They have a killer she crab soup and hush puppies too. It may not be everyone's favorite, but after having tried many, many restaurants from Corolla to Hatteras, Darrell's is truly one of my very favorites. Don't try to eat there on Sunday though, you will find an empty parking lot.

“Maybe it was off season...”
Reviewed March 16, 2009

Three of us had dinner on an early March night and we all expected more than we got -- my $12 flounder was especially disappointing, and our French fries were poor and the green beans were more gray than green. The other seafood dishes were OK. Being understaffed, it seemed, service was sketchy. The emphasis here seems to be on price rather than quality.

If you want a nice, semi-formal setting, this place is not for you. Think fast-food seafood and that's what Darrell's is like. Not horrible, but not the best either. The food was rather plain, but I suppose it all depends on what kind of a restaurant you are looking for.

“Quick, convenient, cheap and casual”
Reviewed August 15, 2008

Darrell's was recommended to us by a staff member at Roanoke Island Festival Park. We wanted something close by, inexpensive, casual and very fast. We got all of those. We wanted to get in and out because we had tickets to the Lost Colony and wanted to walk around the Elizabethan Gardens beforehand. We let our waitress know this when we ordered, and they were very quick. I had fried clam strips, and my friend had fried chicken. Both were tasty and met our expectations. There were several large family groups dining there. It looked like a number of locals were there too. It is definitely more "down home" and not a fancy place, but after a day of sightseeing and in a rush, it definitely worked for us. The location is convenient, right on the main road coming into Manteo.

Great service, nice family atmosphere, not gourmet but everything was good and had big portions.
