Owner description: Bursting with action and excitement, The Lost Colony is the epic story of America's first English colony. Over thirty years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, a group of 117 men, women and children waded ashore on Roanoke Island in July 1587 to establish the first permanent settlement of its kind in the Americas. Recruited by Sir Walter Raleigh, among these settlers was John White, his pregnant daughter, Eleanor Dare, her husband Ananias and the Indian chief Manteo who had become an English ally during a previous visit in Britain. They unloaded their belongings and supplies and repaired on old fort previously erected on the island. On August 18, 1587 Eleanor Dare gave birth to a daughter she named Virginia, thus earning the distinction of being the first English child born on American soil. Ten days later, John White departed for England promising to return with more supplies. It was the last time he would ever see his family. Three years later, John White returned to Roanoke Island on his granddaughter's third birthday only to find the settlement deserted, plundered and surrounded by overgrown brush. On one of the palisades, he found the single word "CROATOAN" carved into the surface, and the letters "CRO" carved into a nearby tree. The 117 pioneers of Roanoke Island had vanished into the great wilderness and into folklore. Their collective fate to this day remains unknown and is considered to be America's greatest mystery. Nestled along the shores of America's most historic and mysterious island, over 100 professional actors, technicians and designers have gathered every summer since 1937 to honor the memory of the brave people who came here to build a new country. The production is as epic as their story. Written by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Paul Green, The Lost Colony is a cultural treasure and the best family entertainment on the Outer Banks! Performances Monday through Saturday nights May 29-Aug 22, 2015 at 7:30PM.

We had great seats, at half price. Loved that Ira David Wood III was involved this year. He makes a production so much better. The meet and greet after the show was great. I hope next time to do the backstage tour prior to the show.

Over the years I have been to The Lost Colony production numerous times but had not been in quite a few years until 8/2013. The production was so much better than I had remembered despite the rain! The staff kept us well informed on when the storm would move out of the area and the production was back in progress as soon as it was safe! No one can control the weather but they dealt with it in a very preofessional manner and worked around it! I was extremely impressed. The only thing I would change, if I could, was the traffic jam getting there across the Wright Memorial Bridge! I should have known better than to try that on a Saturday afternoon in August! The costumes were awesome and the acting and atmosphere was great! I highly recoomend this to families, couples, or groups!

Thank you so much for your great review! We pride ourselves on providing the best Family Entertainment on the Outer Banks and it sounds like, in your case at least, we hit the nail on the head. Rain is something we have to deal with all the time and while I won't claim that we always get it right, I think I can safely say that no one leaves our theatre feeling as if they were treated unfairly. We work very hard at it. And perhaps in another year....we'll get the bridge situation figured out for you!! We hope that you'll make it back on a future trip to the Outer Banks!

Have seen the outdoor play over 50 times over the last 45 years and although the cast and some of the staging changes the play remains very good . It is a nice time for family and friends and especially young children with the Indians and colonists scenes

It was very cool watching the play in the outdoor theater; there was a lot of action and it was very exciting…at times it lagged a bit and it seemed that it would never end. So, though enjoyable, I found myself looking at my watch a fair bit.

Thank you so much for taking time to let us know about your visit! We take seriously the feedback of our patrons and we've heard from many, including here, that people get out of the theatre too late. We are taking big steps to change this for 2014, including starting our Monday evening shows a full hour earlier (7:30) than last year. On all other nights the show starts now at 8PM, rather than 8:30. This combined with our efforts to cut 20-30 minutes out of the run time of the show should reduce what was close to a 3 hour night, to just over 2. We are very conscious of the value of ones time on vacation AND we are certain that it takes a couple of hours to convey our story in a meaningful and entertaining way. We will continue to strive to hit the right balance and feedback like yours is essential to us getting it right. Thank you so much!

This was a wonderful evening with friends visiting from England and Jamaica. We were very happy with the seating and the show was so interesting and historical. The actors are great and we know this is a major stepping stone in their careers. They put so much energy into the drama it made us appreciate the hardships the First Settlers endured.
