The guides on the farm are family members, living close to the farm, they even look after the farm animals when the farm is closed. Very knowledgeable and we even got to try some corn cakes, fresh off the cast iron skillet! Feeding the chickens was great and watching Charlie the ox plow the field was a lot of fun.

Wife and I really enjoyed this lovely attraction and look forward to taking the Grandkids there next time. As a non-profit the relatively small entrance fee goes to continue to restore and improve this historical gem, not line someone's pockets, which is even better. The people are dressed in period clothing and take the time to share their considerable knowledge of the family and times when this was an active working farm in the early 1800s. The buildings are all either authentic or very good reproductions, well furnished from the period, and many things are working and being used which brings it all to life. The family cemetary is on the property and is still maintained - and used - by decendants of the original owners whose graves are there. Our visit was before the busy season which was nice - felt personal and you could imagine you were there visiting the family as they went about their daily activities. Excellent couple of hours, highly recommend.

Island Farm is a really fun, affordable farm where characters walk around in period costume. You'll have fun meandering while the kids will love the cows, horses, and sheep that they can see, smell, and pet.

I went with several family members in early November. It was nice to be able to tour the farm without many other tourists there. The farm reminds me of a very small Colonial Williamsburg. The interpreters were all nice and most seemed to have a detailed knowledge about what went when it was an actual working farm. They have done a great job rebuilding things; and I look forward to going back once they have the windmill working. I'm sure younger children will be thrilled with the chickens roaming the grounds, and the cows in the back pasture.

The only negative I would have is the cost; it seemed a bit pricey for me. They are a non-profit, so maybe they need the price to stay afloat. Not to mention it is a tourist area.

My parents live on the OBX and we often visit them. We have been to The Island Farm twice, and both times it has been fantastic. I am something of a connoisseur of historic sites, and this one is top notch. The curator is very knowledgeable, as are the other docents. The docents are all in period clothing and man several sites, such at the kitchen/laundry, blacksmith area, garden, main house, and wagon rides pulled by an ox. There is so much to do and learn there, for little kids and adults alike. Also, there are different things going on on different days, activities reflect life on the farm so they vary from visit to visit. I truly enjoy visiting this gem!
