“Disappointing”
Reviewed October 16, 2012

For a B&B that bills itself and its customers as a "distinguished" inn, this one fell short. At the very least, any B&B should have excellent coffee. Theirs isn't even good -- and on the first morning, there were lapses in its availability. The breakfast was OK but nothing special. We've had more distinguished breakfasts at lower-tiered B&Bs. The breakfast service the second morning was barely adequate; the first morning it was sub-standard. The afternoon dessert was good, except for the lack of decent coffee, on par with other B&Bs of all levels in which we've stayed. Other B&Bs in this class serve guests afternoon wine; The White Doe will sell it to you. Our room was too cold, though linens were quality and bed was comfortable. The gardens are nice, but after several hours of tourist activities, we returned for some R&R, only to find a wedding in progress, limiting our access to the facilities. If they had merely told us about it, we could've rearranged our schedule for the day.

How well I remember this day!! I was most up-set … when I arrived that morning I was informed that our Italian Coffee/Expresso machine was not working and the Server had made drip coffee to be put out in Air Pots. I immediately got a cup to try and had to pour it out. When I asked about it I was told by the Server that he did not know how to make coffee since he did not drink it. He was just trying to do his best to get through breakfast. Needless to say we tried to recover from the breakfast shortcomings, but the service and coffee were not up to par.
As to our not serving complimentary wine in the afternoons, some inns do and some do not. At our inn we have chosen to serve snacks, baked desserts, special soda drinks, coffee & tea. We do not sell wine by the glass and we only provide wine by the bottle for sale in the gift shop. We do not advertise complimentary wine as an amenity.
The White Doe Inn does host weddings; however, the activities are all contained in the back Garden Area and the dining room immediately adjacent to the outside gardens. During that period of time all other common areas and guest access to the inn is not impacted. Afternoon refreshments for the guests are moved to the library so guests will not have to mix with the wedding guests in the dining area. If our guests were not informed that morning at breakfast that certainly was something that should have happened and probably was part of all the confusion at breakfast.
We regret that their experience was so disappointing and would recommend that anytime a guest is experiencing something not to their liking they should talk with the Innkeeper to see how issues can be resolved or if something can be done to better accommodate them. We always appreciate receiving both negative and positive comments … that is the best way for us to correct problems. However, if you take time to let the Innkeeper know while you are there you might have a better experience in the end.

My husband and I just returned from the Inn after staying there for 2 nights for our wedding anniversary - it was wonderful! My husband found the little touches the best part of the inn and sets it apart from other options in the area. The tea, coffee, snacks, bottled water in the room, dvd library....everything that you would be charged extra at other places were abundant here. The afternoon/evening snacks were well stocked and not having to wrestle other guests for the last brownie was refreshing :)

We stayed in the Roanoak room on the third floor and it was lovely - very spacious and the spa shower was heavenly. We had a peek at the other 2 rooms on the third floor (Garrett and Tower Suite) as they were vacant when we arrived and they are breathtaking. The only drawback for me was the extremely narrow staircase to access the third floor - bit scary for me. Also, on the second night, I was kept awake by the neighbors in the tower suite who had voices that carried. Only a problem for me as a light sleeper - my husband was not disturbed as much. When we return, we would stay in the Garrett next time as it is not connected to another room.

There was a wedding at the Inn on the second day of our stay and it did not impact us at all. I was worried that I would feel intrusive but the size of the Inn means that you can relax and feel as if you are the only couple in the house - so blissfully relaxing.
The breakfast on the veranda was nice and Bob (the Owner) came around and chatted to all of the guests. We would definitely stay here again the next time we plan on visiting Manteo. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and felt the stress just melt away.

Room Tip: You cannot go wrong with any room! However, if you prefer piece and quiet, I would recommend the Gar...

My husband and I wanted a quiet little getaway so we headed to Manteo. We had visitied the White Doe Inn in 2003 and this stay was just as wonderful as the last. We stayed in the Tower Suite which was comfortable and spacious. Breakfast was wonderful both mornings. The afternoon snacks were delightful as well. The inn was full during our visit, but it never had that feeling of being crowded. Overall our stay was wonderful, the location of the Inn is in perfect proximity to all of the resturants, bars and Festival Park. It was great not to have to get in our car all weekend. I will definatly be recommending The White Doe Inn to family and friends.

We spent 3 wonderful days in this charming home. The turret room was comfortable and sunny with a nice private balcony to enjoy morning coffee and do some reading. The hosts Bebe & Bob were so gracious and Bob was like an old friend sharing stories with us and giving us pointers on places to go and eat. Morning breakfast started off our days with style and the afternoon snacks were a welcome treat from sightseeing all day. Within walking distance to the waterfront and shops and a nice clean and safe neighborhood. Will return again when we visit OBX!

The room was very comfortable and kept very clean by a pleasant staff. The only complaint is that the room was cool at night requiring an additional blanket. The breakfasts each morning were excellent. No two were the same. We skipped lunches. Bob and Bebe were gracious hosts. I would stay there again. The location is convenient for sightseeing.

Traveling for the NC State Harley Davidson Bike Rally......We have visted several B&B all over North Carolina and the White Doe is by far one of my favorites! The location is the best and the house is so beautiful and classy. If you are headed towards Nags Head or the surrounding areas please treat yourself to the White Doe. Clean, friendly people, breakfast and snacks are wonderful. Five Star all the way!

Simply stated--best weekend getaway to a B&B ever. Less than 2 hour drive from our home, parking was a cinch, and check-in was smooth. The day before arriving, we preordered a bottle of house red and 2 salads through the Inn's website to be brought to the room shortly after check- in to tide us over until late dinner reservations up the street. These were brought to us within 5 minutes of entering our room--very fresh and flavorful, but huge! No detail was spared down to the miniature salt and pepper shakers to the beautiful serving tray and chinaware. Upon arrival we were also met with the afternoons gourmet selections of complimentary coffee, teas, sodas, snacks, etc in the grand dining room so we probably could have gone without the salads, but nevertheless they were so good. Perhaps if we were staying in, this would have been sufficient to serve as dinner. So this is only check in.....it gets even better! The Innkeeper was gracious from the start, and the owner, Bob met me in the parlor to introduce himself and inquire a little about us. I could tell he just loves people and the desire to serve the comforts of his guests! He insisted that we "take a peek" at any of the open rooms, which we found to all be excellent choices for our next stay. So on to actually experiencing our room--WOW! We stayed in the 3rd floor Roanoke suite which was so beautifully decorated. Furniture placement was appealing and inviting, the fireplace added to the ambiance, and the spa shower is something I want in my bathroom at home! Some of the rooms online appeared bright and open, but we chose this one for its dark tones. The entire room was cozy, not cramped. We were across from the Tower suite and Garrett suite, both available for a short time to peek in and both equally inviting. Dinner was a short walk 2 blocks up the street along the waterfront, but we drove due to intermittent rain. Cute waterfront area with shops and boutiques, a few upscale bars with live music and our restaurant, 1587. Crowded and a bit loud towards the end of dinner as a huge party arrived and was sat near us, but you could tell it was a local favorite and everyone was there to reconnect with someone. Great food and service, though. A brief walk on the bridge connecting it to the Island was refreshing afterwards. The Inn's magnificently rumored "to die for" breakfast the next morning was prepared and again no minor detail was overlooked in the table setting, just hope I remembered to use the right utensil with each course. But I don't think anyone sitting at the table with us would've noticed as everyone staying there seemed really friendly and interested in the person next to them. But what's more....I think they were just eagerly anticipating the next course because it was so good. There was a woman from Northern Cali who had never tried grits and well, let's just say she will be back just for those. Watching her amusement while eating them was classic! And they were the best grits ever. There were other options for dining if you wanted to be alone....a smaller table in the library off of the parlor was set and the weather was nice enough if you wanted to sit on the veranda. Peace Train, aka Buddy the resident cat would've gladly shared his seat. Just make sure you're wearing thick pants because he likes to massage your legs when he invites himself onto your lap and he is not declawed! He was very friendly. Ok, so time to check out and we were sad to leave. The Innkeeper's desk is situated off of the small "shop" which was the perfect place to purchase a goodie bag of spa like stuff for the mom keeping the kids, desperately awaiting our return home. The shop also had a few kid friendly books, wines and gourmet goodies, and small cottage type beach themed housewares in addition to all the bath salts and pampering items. The only bad thing I can say about this experience is it was too short!
