“Another Great Stay”
Reviewed May 27, 2014

My wife and I started our summer with another stay at the Holden Inn Memorial Day weekend and were extremely pleased as usual. A new offering this year is complementary coffee in the morning on the front porch of the Inn. A cup of coffee while stting in a rocking chair on the picturesqe porch is a great way to start the day. If you're planning a trip to Wellfleet, make the Holden Inn your first choice for accomodations. It's a classic coastal New England Inn, always clean and friendly, and provides the best atmosphere, location and value in Wellfleet, if not the entire lower Cape We'll return several times this summer, and look forward to every visit.

Room Tip: Lodge rooms all have shared baths. Cottage and Main Inn rooms have private baths and AC.

Our idea was to go to Wellfleet, invite a few family members & select friends (we were 12 in total) and get married. We wanted low key and congenial. We wanted hands-off. We wanted privacy and consideration. We got it all at the Holden Inn. This is a New England inn, people, it isn't a boutique hotel or a themed B&B in Provincetown. The staff and owners were terrific. Friendly, helpful, but not in our business. They purposefully didn't rent any other rooms while we were there so that we had the inn to ourselves. Can't get much more accommodating than that.

After finisihing the most successful season The Holden Inn has ever had including 10 incredible weddings we hosted we are able to thank the reviewers who have written nice remarks of their stay with us.For those of you that can't seem to be happy anywhere you go we do try to accept some of your comments in making our business even better, but the majority of your remarks are plainly rediculous and hopefully the general public sees through them. Our successful year shows that we do it right and as it is said these days---It is the way of the world to be cruel.

We have stayed here twice: once in room 4 in the Summer, and most recently in room 3. I have three problems with this place, two of which are easily fixed by management:

1. There are steep and narrow stairs to the second floor of the main building (rooms 2, 3, and 4). The treads on those stairs are very shallow-- maybe 7 inches. It is very cumbersome to haul luggage up the stairs. The person who checked us in made no offer to help with the bags up the stairs. My wife walks with a cane and I have a bad shoulder and he saw us debating who was going to carry the bags up. No offer to help. We recently stayed a similar place and the owner offered right away to have someone help with the bags. So, if you have any trouble with stairs, or a weak knee, hip, shoulder, head to other accommodations.

2. No coffee or tea anywhere on the premises. No coffee pot in the room and no coffee service in the common areas. I can't even remember the last time I stayed in a place where I had to get in my car to get that first cup of coffee. It would be easy for the management to set up a simple coffee service by the little office area on the front porch.

3. In the main building, you will hear every noise made by the other visitors. The walls are very thin and the floors creak. Not much the management can do about that-- its part of the charm, I guess.

The location of the Inn is great, with plenty of off street parking.

Room Tip: In the main building, room 4 is probably the quietest. Room 3 faces the street.

The Holden Inn is a special place. My girlfriend and I stayed there over Memorial Day weekend and had a wonderful visit. I have spent every summer of my life in Wellfleet, but rather than stay at my family's cottage, we decided to hide away at the Holden Inn to create our own memories and experience of Wellfleet (aka the most wonderful place on earth). Holden Inn gave us just that.

Fred and Patty, the owners, are amazingly kind. You are made to feel like you're staying in your own little world, but they are there to help in the event you need anything. They were more than happy to sit down on the porch rocking chairs with us to tell us all about the Inn and everything it offers.

If you're looking for the Ritz, or for the more commercial, generic offerings of the upper Cape, you're in the wrong place -- and thank goodness! Quaint, relaxed and scenic, with fantastic proprietors, Holden Inn is true Cape Cod perfection. We plan to get married there in a year and a half, and look forward to more incredible memories at the Holden Inn.

Room Tip: Note that some rooms have shared baths -- it's a crazy great value for younger groups, but if yo...

This B&B could do a great job. However, the reality is the place is tired. From our arrival the staff barely acknowledged us and we found our room in a just about ready state. The bedding had been changed but only some surfaces had recently been dusted and the floor was unhoovered. The private bathroom we paid extra for was at the other end of the hall and another room where footwear was necessary.
The price and location is great - everything else is in the could do better category.

We stayed for one night. Read many reviews and they were basically accurate. Could be a fantastic place with old New England charm, but... We were greeted a bit lack luster, with limited communication from the gentleman on the front porch. Found the room with no problem, #8 at the cottage. Cute, with private bathroom, but no shower... No problem using the outdoor shower in the morning, but only one hook to hold all the clothes, shaving kit etc. made due however. Tried to get an early start, and couldn't figure out how to check out, as the office hours start at 9:00. Felt like we had to drop the key off, to finalize the transaction. Later found that we could have just left the key in the room and locked the door. Oh well, lesson learned. Good location with walking distance to pier and some restaurants. Would be really great to be able to get a coffee and maybe a muffin, to get you going. Would stay again, but only if we had bathroom with shower.

We were grateful to be able to get a room at the last minute, and appreciated the prompt e-reply, but there was some confusion over the telephone because of language issues. Not convenient that they only accept a check for a deposit; no credit card, no PayPal. Certainly not a communicative staff; no idea what to do with our key when we left before the office opened.

The setting is great - right in the center of things, nice old houses - but the rooms are not well cared-for. With a little effort it could be so much nicer, and could still be inexpensive. A sliver of old, used soap in the shower and the end of a cheap bottle of hand-soap on the sink; toilet smelled un-washed. Even the peppermints kindly left on the bureau looked as though they'd been left out in the sun for a few days, or maybe gone through the wash. The smell of mold in the closet was overwhelming; we didn't dare hang our clothes in there for fear we'd be sneezing the next day. With a little love and attention this place could be great. We don't need anything fancy, but we do enjoy the sense that somebody is taking care of a place.

Kind of a strange room setup, too. They told us we were getting a room with a double-bed and a single (we just needed a double, but this was all they had at the last minute) and a private bath. In fact, it was actually kind of a suite: you had to walk through a room with two singles, and then through the bathroom, to get to our room. I guess that would be ok for a family, although it seemed pretty inconvenient for the people in "our" room, who would be unable to get out if anyone were in the bathroom. It might have been nice if the guy who gave us the key had explained the setup, but he said almost nothing at all, and certainly didn't welcome us - we thought we were in the wrong room until we found the second bedroom beyond the bathroom!

I realize that the price is pretty low for high season on the Cape, but I don't think that the improvements it needs are ones that would cost much if anything. To tell the truth, I think the price is a little steep for what you get.
