“Good for a short-stay to Canyon de Chelly.”
Reviewed April 8, 2010

We spent two comfortable nights at the Holiday Inn, Chinle. The rooms were well appointed, clean and included free wi-fi and a fridge. The bathroom was also clean and in good condition. All of the furnishings appeared to be in fine condition. The only real downside is that the walls a rather thin. Be mindful of your neighbours.

Our view on the value of hotel reflects the fact that we had a corporate discount. Otherwise, the rate seems to be about the same as other hotels in the area, that is, rather overpriced.

Others have mentioned the poor or slow service in the hotel restaurant. We also found this to be true, but the food was perfectly fine and not over-priced. However, after dining at the Juntion Restaurant on our second night we would have preferred eating at the hotel restaurant again.

Overall, this Holiday Inn is fine for those short visits to Canyon de Chelly.

The room was comfortable and if you are going to Canyon de Chelly you can't get closer than this. The entrance is visible from the hotel. My complaint is that the people at the front desk and in the restaurant were rude. The service at the restaurant was horrible. We only stayed for one night but every interaction we had with staff was unpleasant.

Room was clean and buildings well maintained our room was quiet at night and we had no complaints. The restaurant was another story. Food ranged from acceptable to poor and the service from barely acceptable to lousy. If you stay in the motel find someplace else to eat. Friends have been there since and they waited over an hour for service.

The motel room was small but immaculate. Great service, outside exit, and all amenities were as advertised - except the poor TV reception. One channel was 100% noise. A little over priced, but the best place, by far, to stay at in Chinle.

The restaurant was a different matter! It took over a hour and 10 minutes to prepare and serve a simple, and terrible tasting, Mexican combination plate. Honest! Even after the long wait I couldn't eat the dinner - it was that bad. Better you should eat at the local fast food joint for a fourth the price, quick service, and at least edible. I don't know what went wrong, but it went terribly wrong!

Stayed for one night at the H.I. in Chinle passing through to see Canyon de Chelly. Overall, pretty happy with the choice (though truth be told, it was the only one of the 3 big choices that had space) Still, all being said I'd definitely choose it again.

Pros:
-Entrance to the visitor center of Canyon de Chelly is literally within eyesight/stone's throw
-The pueblo decor is sort of tacky, but sort-of fun; same goes for the matching interior decor; sort of tacky, but better than bland walls; looks like they were trying to set a mood
-OK restaurant on premesis, that serves a good variety of foods, including Navajo Fry bread and Navajo tacos; though alcohol is illegal on the reservation, they did seem to try to appease the customers by offering a selection of alcohol-free beers and wines--a nice gesture I guess
-Pool--heated (and still being used in Oct!)
-Pretty nice gift shop
-Spacious rooms, very clean
-Free WiFi that works
-Friendly staff
-good water pressure
-bed--very comfortable!!! 4 great pillows and very comfortable mattress. I'm a bit fan of the Hampton Inn beds, pillows, and linen, and this seemed to be out of the same mold.

Cons
-A bit pricey--$104/pm w/AAA discount, but seems to be the going rate for the area
-my Room (137) near the entrance was loud. also, walls appeared to be quite thin

And yes, as has been written before there were quite a few stray animals roaming around--dogs in the parking lot, a cat in the lobby. All were friendly, looked pretty well-fed, and after spending nearly a month on the 'rez', I can say that this is nothing unique to the Holiday Inn or Chinle. Also--if you'd like to arrange a jeep tour to the Canyon, they can help you there. And a big surprise when I arrived on Sat night--the place was hopping! there was a 45 min wait for Garcia's restaurant (apparently the big competition, Best Western's restaurant closed early) and the lobby was packed w/a crowd of people speaking all different languages. Met a quite a few interesting people.

There aren't a lot of good options for lodging around Canyon de Chelly. This Holiday Inn is modern, clean and very close to the park. I'd strongly recommend it.

Our small family group (mum, dad and 13 yr old son) spent just one night here on our epic road trip involving lots of miles and several motels/hotels of differing standards!

This was, in fact, one of the nicest - although I can understand many of the previous comments. Our room with 2 beds was good - in the separate block beyond the pool, but about 2 mins walk to the reception and to the restaurant. Our son enjoyed watching American TV from his bed, and we were appreciative of air conditioning (a tad noisy) and very comfortable beds. In fact, we found during our trip that Holiday Inn bed linen was the most comfortable and attractive.

As I said, we visited many different motels during our 3 week holiday and this was one of the better ones, despite some of its weaknesses. A previous critic talked about the lack of laundry services - they must have missed them, as we were lucky enough to be in the same block and we managed to do our mid-holiday washing/drying in a couple of hours in the free facilities located in that block.

No free breakfast available, but actually I found the blueberry pancakes were some of the best on the trip. No alcohol served for dinner - but hey, that shouldn't be such a problem, and we enjoyed the range of sodas or water that was available instead. Slightly disappointed in quality of dinner, but it was not a major problem... just a bad choice.

Re the comments about pushy sales people etc at the lookouts, we looked at what was on offer and declined to buy - were not further hassled. Mostly the craftsmen sat under the bushes and only came out if they thought we were genuinely interested. We enjoyed a hike down to the White House one evening, encountering a local running group who were doing laps up and down the canyon, and thought it was wonderful. Much less commercial than the Grand Canyon. Really glad we did the trip - Chile is a little odd, but it's only because it's not what we're used to and therefore requires a bit of "courage" to explore - however, the canyon is wonderful and has some amazing ruins that make you realise how ancient the USA really is!
