This was a great basic room, clean with a comfortable bed. We had the end room with the hot water heater nestled in the corner; it was a bit loud at night and sounded like someone was rolling a barrel through the parking lot. The room warmed up easily and stayed warm all night without having to run the heater. The location is marvelous!

Room Tip: Keep away from end rooms to avoid water heater noise.

Thank you for the rating and review of your stay at Thunderbird Lodge/Sacred Lodge in Canyon De Chelly.

Navajo Nation Hospitality Enterprise took over management of the Lodge in January 2016. Since then many improvements and upgrades have been made to the guest rooms as well as the property and surroundings. All guest rooms now are equipped with a Keurig coffee/tea maker, flat screen television, hair dryer, microwave and mini-fridge. All the rooms have new carpet, mattresses, linens and towels. The wifi has been updated, but still may not be as fast as what some people are used to given the remote area.

We also are offering All-Day and 4-Hour Navajo-guided tours of the Canyon in our 10 passenger, 6-wheel drive Pinzgauer army-troop carrier vehicles. It is the best way to really experience Canyon De Chelly.

Should your journey bring you back to Canyon De Chelly, we hope to welcome you back to Thunderbird Lodge.

All our best,
Thunderbird Lodge Management

I thought this place was great. It is on the reservation inside Canyon de Chelly. The room was clean and comfortable. The bed was very comfortable due to the foam pad on top. One of the most comfortable hotel beds, I've ever slept on. It was very quiet, great place for sleeping. Lots of trees around the grounds, good place to check out the birds. Arlinda at the front desk was very helpful. I would much rather stay there than the hotels in Chinle as they are on the road. You can't get closer to the driving loops around the Canyon. The cottonwoods in the canyon were turning in October. I would go back again. I didn't try the restaurant as we got back too late.

Visited back in 2004 and it was really bad. Just visited on October 24th for one night and what an improvement. The rooms was clean, had heat and bathrooms upgraded. Made reservations on line and though " what the hell it is only one night" but was so suprised. Found out that new ownership as of February. You are doing great. The improvements that I saw are wonderful. Kudos to you. The other thing that I feel is a real improvement is that no tours leave from the property. All the tours now go from the visitors center and must be book seperately. The Cafeteria is just that a cafeteria. We had breakfast there and for the price it was great. We had dinner off property. If you are looking for a 5 star motel or hotel than do not look in Chinle. If you are looking for a comfortable, quiet and right in the park, the book the Sacred Canyon Lodge. Good luck to the new owners, I think you are doing just great.

Room Tip: we stayed in room 10 and it was just great

The Lodge was comfortable and quiet, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Coffee in the room would have been nice, but the short walk to the office was not a great inconvenience. The food in the cafeteria was not great, though breakfast was certainly okay. The convenience of being inside the park counted for a lot. Mainly, the Lodge was a jumping-off point--for a trip to Monument Valley, for a guided tour of Canyon de Chelly; and the accommodations were similar to what we'd encountered in Springdale and outside the North rim of the Grand Canyon.

Your will be better off staying somewhere else. The room was very basic and clean but nothing to write home about. The Cafeteria had a very limited menu and close by 8PM every night. The accommodations standards were more like a third world country. My recommendation would be to skip this area altogether.

Canyon de Chelly was great! The hotel was terrible! It should have been bulldozed 20 years ago and rebuilt. It is in need of so much upgrade that the only answer is ton start from scratch. Customer service is nonexistent. The only available food is a cafeteria when the food is marginal at best. I would never recommend this place to anyone, especially when there is a new Holiday Inn three blocks away. We did not stay there but wish we had. Camping in a tent would almost be better than the Canyon de Chelly Thunderbird Lodge. I'm amazed that the US Department of the Interior suns that place.

Dear Guest,

We are delighted you loved the canyon, and are so sorry your experience at the Lodge was not at all up to par.

In January 2016, Navajo Nation Hospitality Enterprise took over management of the Thunderbird Lodge. We have made many upgrades and improvements to our guest rooms, buildings and grounds. All of our guest rooms now are equipped with a Keurig coffee maker, flat screen television, microwave, refrigerator, new carpet and linens.

We are also offering all-day, 4-hour and sunset tours of the canyon in our off road vehicles which seat 10 passengers.

If your journey brings you back to Canyon De Chelly, we hope that you will consider staying with us again at Thunderbird Lodge.

Sincerely,
Thunderbird Lodge Management

The room was clean and comfortable but we had to go to the reception for coffee (although as much as we wanted) which meant making that journey - it was raining when we were there! We took breakfast at the restaurant and wish we hadn't. Nice diner in town for evening meal. We did the walk down into the canyon which was great and easier than we were led to believe. Good place to stay for all the sights to see from various viewpoints on both sides of the canyon.
