Canyon del Muerto cannot be easily seen from the north drive so a tour up the canyon is the best way. We recommend Canyon de Chelly Tours with Leon Skyhorse Thomas or his sister Leone. Their website is: canyondechellytours.com.

Navajo guide explained the traditions surrounding the need for the Navajo to come back to what they see as the heart of the Navajo nation. One gets the feeling that you do not want anything to change.

Canyon de Chelly National Monument actually is made up of two canyons; Canyon de Chelly and Canyon del Muerto. Either can be toured with a Navajo guide, Canyon del Muerto is viewed by car from the North rim drive. While there are some amazing views, the best ruins and a lot of history to Canyon del Muerto (Canyon of the Dead), overall it comes in a close second to Canyon de Chelly viewed by car along the South rim drive.

You have to take the tour. It is a beautiful canyon. If possible hire a guide ahead of time and hike the canyon. The absolute best experience of my life. The scenery is beautiful and the area is rich in history. The horse ride through the canyon is probably one of the best for pure enjoyment.
