Nice views from convenient pull-offs. They are all pretty close to each other (closer than they look on the map) and offer diverse views - some include the ruins.

We loved the views from each of the overlooks. Really spectacular. There were wild horses roaming in the canyon and looked like ants moving along because it was so far below us. The descriptions at each stop were very informative. The ruins were facinating. We spent a long time there and glad to have the time to spend.

A lot of visitors opt for the South Rim Drive and with good reason – although plan ahead and give the North Rim some quality time too! Driving the South Rim is 37 miles round trip with a one-way in/out system. We opted to drive right to the end of this road so that all the turns to the overlooks would be right hand turns only. Start at the Visitors Centre first to get your bearings, have a look at their displays, movie , Hogan house, gift store and take advantage of the restrooms - none on the drive.

It worked well and in some case we did manage to gain some time by doing one of the most stunning and popular overlooks first – Spider Rock – an amazing twin rock formation rising 750’ from the floor. The Navajo people call her Spider Grandmother with an interesting legend. The whole Monument is home to working farms and many families live along the valley floor.

White House Ruins overlook is also one of the best features of the Monument and if you can spare the time and feel sufficiently fit and able, it is worth the 2-3 hour hike down 600ft to the floor. Moderately strenuous, the hike is achievable if you take your time – dependent on how you like some heights in places – we enjoyed it very much.

Several other overlooks are worth doing and each has a different prospect. Navajo craft tables are set up in most of the overlook car parking areas however, they are courteous in their trading approach. Allow at least 2 hours without the hike to admire the amazing scenery – there is nothing quite the same in any other major National Park in the surrounding States - this Monument is also entirely comprised of Navajo tribal land.

Enjoy your experience!

To get the best from South Rim Drive you do need to go the full distance to Spider Rock, which is perhaps the highlight of the many stunning views that you get here. The information leaflet that is isuued has a clear guide and map. The pull-outs are irregular, although some ar quite close together. Very worthwhile!

All the stops along the South Rim Drive were great. We went during the early morning and the sun made the canyon glow. We love the shapes and colors of the rock formations and the canyon walls. If you only have one side to do, this would be it.
