“It's a specialty cheese shop in Downtown... it's THE specialty cheese shop in Downtown.”
Reviewed March 28, 2013

We stopped here on the Bite San Diego tour, and this was probably the find of the tour. I've been having trouble with my previous source for Gouda varieties for my Dutch mother, and now I don't have to worry about that anymore.

Venissimo has quite a large selection of very good cheeses. Soft to hard, aged various lengths of time, various add-ins, etc. If you want Gouda, we saw at least 12 different varieties, each labeled with the milk-animal, length of age, source location, and additional ingredients. The same went for cheddar, etc.

Yes, it's not cheap. Good cheese isn't. But $15-$20 a pound for the Gouda locally that I was having shipped in for $15/lb + shipping isn't bad.

Added bonus: They have locally-produced chocolate and other cheese-accompaniments in the store.

“Visit this shop at your own risk!”
Reviewed December 26, 2012

The cheese and other yummies in this shop combined with the attentive and knowledgeable staff will likely start an expensive cheese habit. They should post a cheese-aholics hotline on the door. Soooooo good!

“good cheese selection, marginal service”
Reviewed April 23, 2011

More of a specialty shop than a restaurant. We love all kinds of cheeses, but were treated rudely, when asking about cheeses they did not carry and requested small samples to try ones we were not familiar with. Very limited selection of the Danish, Dutch, Swiss and German cheeses we love. View their selection on their very fancy website.
If you can't find what you want, go across the street to the German butcher shop for great service. They had my wife's favorite, Danish Esrom, and all sorts of authentic German sausages and lunch meats.
