“nice hotel with minor flaws”

The hotel is pretty nice, and clean and conveniently located near the gaslamp district with many nice (but pricey) restaurants closeby. Taxi to hotel from airport is about $11.

There are some minor things that people should know:

(1) it is right across from the greyhound bus station. There may be broadcasts at 4:30am annoucing buses leaving. It is ok if you are still on eastern time zone.

(2) a tram line runs right next to the hotel, so if you plan to hold a meeting then occasionally the tram noise will drown out the speaker.

Therefore, ask for a quiet room and at a higher floor. I stayed on the 7th floor and had no problem whereas colleagues on the 3rd floor was a little bothered.

We stayed at the Bristol for 1 week and will not be returning. We were placed in a room with two double beds although we had requested a king size bed. I only note this because once we were moved to a room with a king size bed, it was even worse than the original room. The batteries in the tv's remote control were dead. There was zero privacy since the door to the bathroom was a flimsy sliding door on squeaky hinges with no lock. The water temp in the shower was nearly impossible to adjust. The bathtub was chipped and peeling. In the living area the decor was too bright and ugly (red and orange stripes, brown stripe curtains, etc.). The air conditioning control box must have been from about 1970 and was hard to regulate. The comforter had a crusty stain in the middle of it. As far as the noise level, it was really difficult to sleep due to the Greyhound Bus station across the street. The joke with fellow customers of this hotel was trying to figure out which floor the elevator would "land" on. I never knew which floor the elevators would take me to, if you pressed 5 you might end up in the parking garage, it was very unreliable. The main "pro" of this hotel is its location. The Bristol is within walking distance to many downtown activities.

This is a great bargain hotel -- small boutique hotel with a distinct look and feel. I stayed here for four days (brief vacation combined with a wedding) There are some faults with the service but, overall, it's hard to beat the "value." It's a small, intimate hotel and while the downtown location made it ideal for getting around on foot, there was some issue with noise -- not from traffic or people but from the whirling exhaust fans of neighboring buildings. It's not terrible by any means but if you're a particularly light sleeper this might bother you.

There's a train stop (light rail) right outside the door, a couple of convenience stores around the corner, and you're only about two or three blocks from the main streets where all the restaurants and shops are. San Diego is not really my sort of city but if I had to go back there I would definitely stay at the Bristol again.

POSITIVES>>>Got a great deal on this hotel...and compared to others in the area, it was a steal. EXCELLENT location. Very convenient to shopping and restaurants. Room was bigger than I expected and very clean. Staff was accomodating and friendly for the most part. NEGATIVES>>>Things at the front desk could have run a little smoother. (When I checked in at 1 a.m. to my reserved room, there was someone else already in that room and I apparently woke them up trying to get my room key to work. Front desk was unaware. Check out was also an event. One clerk, very long wait.) And the room overlooked what I think was the Greyhound bus terminal??? There was a lot of street noise all night long. Sounded like they might have been repairing roads. I would say, if you do not have to be anywhere at any specific time or are just coming to San Diego for a casual stay, this would be a good deal. But if you are traveling on business, you might look for something a little more professional.

I spent three nights at the Bristol attending a conference at the convention center. The location is excellent. The hotel is cheerful and modern, with lots of beautiful artwork. My room was large and comfortable. The housekeeping was so-so, and my minibar fridge was never cold despite my request to have this fixed. However, I found the front desk staff very pleasant and accomodating. Breakfast and room service dinner from the restaurant were quite good. The free high speed internet connection in the room was a plus. Overall I enjoyed my stay, and found it good value next to the overpriced chain hotels offered through the conference.

In light of some of the negative reviews, I was apprehensive about my stay at the Bristol. My fears where unfounded. The service was top-notch as was the room itself. Go to this hotel. Its location is excellent.

Ok, so you might think this place is a 'cool boutique hotel' BUT it is NOT.
Of course, it is trying to ride the wave of popularity and project itself as a small/independent/boutique, but the execution is horrible.
Valet, Bell, Desk, Restaurant and Bar staff are all incompetent and clueless as to how to tend to the needs of guests. Part of what makes a boutique/small hotel appealing is the attention to detail and sevice oriented mindset. None of that here. I think it is either a management problem or an underlying pressure causing (under)staffed to just CYA.
Although it aspires to be and the staff are poorly trained and insensitive to visitors needs. It is unfortunate. The potential is there and the location of the hotel is good. Too bad there is an total lack of hospitality and attention.
For example-
-valet refused to bring my car to get something out of it because hotel uses a private lot down the street and the hotel would have to pay the lot to repark it!
-desk people uncourteous and lacked knowledge of general hotel issues.
-upon arrival bell guy left my bags in lobby for an hour until I finally took them to my room myself.
-restaurant service is deplorable, slow, and rude. food arrived cold.
I suggest that you DO NOT stay here, barring 10 positive reviews in a row. Truly a disappointment and unfortunate experience.
