“Great place, great price, awesome experience!”
Reviewed January 16, 2013

We loved this place! Out of many downtown hotels I've checked out, this is by far the best one. Not only was the price unbeatable ($167 for Deluxe King Room), but the quality of this hotel really impressed us. It's very nicely decorated, the rooms are spotless and beautiful, and most amazing of all, they were quiet! -- this is a big plus, especially for San Diego downtown area. The staff was very accommodating and responded very quickly to our requests. We found our first room (Room 606) very cold in temperature (they even had the engineer check the heater, but after over an hour of running the heater at 90degF, it still felt like 60degF in the room!). So they let us check out other rooms (which we loved) before we settled into room 712, which was smaller (Superior King), but was still very quiet, beautiful and best of all warm! We'll definitely return to this hotel!

Room Tip: Corner rooms are large, but heater may not be effective (e.g., room 606). High floors (6th floor or...

Very reasonably priced (on the internet), friendly staff, good location, the transport information and booking office is right around the corner. The hotel restaurant was heavily discounted for guests and even at full price it was value for money.
The hotel valet parking was pricey but little safe alternatives nearby.
A great place for a short break in San Diego

Dear MWLSW18,

Thank you for your great comments, we really appreciate being recognized for our efforts. The Bristol Hotel offers great value and wee can afford to do this because we are a small, independent boutique hotel that does not have franchise fees and additional expenses associated with some of the larger hotel brands. The parking garage is sublet to an operator, which is a fairly common practice. Our pricing is actually $8 to $10 less than some of our competing hotels and we offer complimentary in and out privileges.

On your next visit to San Diego, we look forward to having you as our guest.

Kind Regards and Safe Travels,

I was in San Diego for an academic conference and chose to stay at the Bristol over the official conference hotel. I am glad that I did. The Bristol staff were so pleasant and the rooms were well appointed. The Bristol provided was a great place to return to after a day of conference activities.

Dear Mike,

Thank You for selecting the Bristol Hotel verses the “Headquarter Hotel.” We were probably a little more cozy and relaxing than some chain hotels. Guests love our nicely appointed rooms, personalized service and great ambiance. Our location is ideal for guests who are visiting for business as we are walking distance to many downtown locations and we are glad you were able to take advantage of this.

Your comments will be shared with my staff and they will be delighted to learn that you enjoyed your stay.

Kind Regards and Safe Travels,

Beautiful boutique hotel in a great location. Loved the decor of the newly renovated room which was enormous but quiet. Paid for breakfast as you went but was able to get anything to suit your taste and service was very friendly. Only thing that was not inviting was the bar area which was tiny and dark so we chose to try out some of the other more appealing places close by. Bus stop close and easily able to walk to the gas lamp area and big shopping centre.

Dear Smithy013,

Thank you for your TripAdvisor review, it is greatly appreciated.

As you pointed out, we have a terrific location near all public transportation, i.e. Bus and Trolley stops, an ideal mode of transportation for seeing the city. However, the best part is that we are within walking distance to all major attractions- the USS Midway Maritime Museum, Petco Park, Horton Plaza, The Gaslamp and Little Italy areas and the Convention Center. I’m sorry the bar was not to your taste as it has a ‘retro ambiance’, but I am pleased to read that you found other bars in the area to your liking!

Once again, thank you for your valued feedback and we look forward to your return.

Have a Happy New Year.

Nice, very clean, quiet, great position and very good staff. I went there on business and everything was just great. It's not your glamorous hotel (rooms might be a bit small for 2-3 people, although not uncomfortably small), but hey! for the amount your paying you shouldn't expect smth like that. Instead it's a very good hotel for a mini holiday or work, with everything working perfectly and 'lots' of internet (it is free and you can hook up as many devices as you want - we all know that's at least three :) phone, ipad and laptop). A short walk from the harbour and good restaurants (and a shopping centre), it also has a good restaurant with delicious food and prompt/nice staff. Think of it as a medium-high quality hotel for a medium-low price. I'll definitely go back to this one while in SD.

I booked, paid for and received confirmation from this hotel months in advance. Upon my arrival, after a long day of flying and arriving at the front desk with our luggage, I was told that they had overbooked and did not have our confirmed room. It seems that the management overrode the reservations system and gave our room to someone else. As a retired hotel General Manager with more than 20 years in the hospitality business, I am very familiar with room management software. It's called the hospitality business for a reason. If you are looking for hospitality, don't waste your time booking with the Bristol in San Diego.

Dear Steven,

Thank you for your comments they were very much taken to heart and from me to you, a Retired Hotel General Manager, I offer you my sincerest apologies.

An overbooking, as a result of an overstay, is always an unpleasant situation and not a frequent occurrence at the Bristol Hotel. On the day that you arrived we had a situation where we had a family extend their departure date for two additional days beyond their departure date because of an illness (an infant was not able to fly because of an inner ear infection). As you know, some things are not in our control and when faced with this, the only alternative was to find you accommodations elsewhere. So here’s the Catch 22- we provided exceptional service to a family in need, we found them a doctor who made a “house call” to the hotel, but in doing this, we caused displeasure to you. This was not intentional and again I profusely apologize to you for our shortcomings. Had we been aware of this situation sooner, we would have tried to contact you so that we could have explained the circumstances before you arrived.

I realize that an apology coming at this time may do little to change your opinion of our hospitality; however, I would like to redeem myself in a future visit. Please contact me directly and I will be sure to extend to you all of our VIP Amenities and a very special Apology Rate.

On behalf of the Bristol Team, we wish you a Happy New Year.

The hotel itself is very nice. But the New Years Eve event was poorly planned and not worth the money. We ate at the 1st st Bar and grill and were severely disappointed. The croissant sandwich came out on sourdough and my date/girlfriends poutine was like dogfood! No cheese and very bland! We will not eat there again.

Dear Jason,

Thank you for your review and your comments will be passed on to our Food and Beverage Director concerning the quality and preparation of the food in the First Avenue Bar and Grille Restaurant. I assure you that we will look into this issue and it is not typical of our restaurant. The New Year’s Eve Party was planned by an Event’s Promoter who had rented our Starlite Roof Ballroom space and your valuable feedback of the event will be passed along to him as well. We will evaluate his performance for next year.

The Bristol is a very nice boutique Hotel just steps away from the Gaslamp District, the Convention Center, the performing arts, Little Italy, and Horton Plaza for fine, retail shopping. We are known for our clean and comfortable accommodations at affordable rates and for personalized services.

Jason, please feel free to contact me in the future so that I may insure that you have a pleasant stay.
